Chapter 5 - Turbulence Ahead

The seatbelt sign chimed cheerfully overhead, and the pilot’s voice crackled through the intercom, announcing that we had reached our cruising altitude and the beverage service would begin shortly.

Julian looked like a man standing on the edge of a cliff waiting for the ground to give way.

“Clara... please,” he whispered, turning his head toward me, his voice trembling with a pathetic desperation that made me wonder how I had ever mistaken him for a strong man. “Let’s talk. Not here. When we land. We can go to a hotel, we can call the attorneys together, we can unwind the injunction. If my business accounts stay frozen for forty-eight hours, the board will vote me out as managing partner. Everything I’ve built—everything we’ve built—will be wiped out.”

“We didn't build it together, Julian,” I corrected him quietly. “You built a house of cards, and you invited someone else to live in the attic while expecting me to pay the mortgage.”

Chloe didn't turn around, but her shoulders tightened visibly at my words. She shifted in her seat, speaking without looking at either of us.

“You’re flying to Miami,” Chloe said, her voice shaking with quiet fury. “You told me your wife didn't care about you. You told me she was cold, distant, and completely checked out of the marriage.”

“Chloe, don’t listen to her, she’s manipulating—” Julian started, but she cut him off with a sharp, venomous snap.

“Shut up, Julian,” she hissed, turning her head to glare at him with absolute contempt. “You lied about your divorce. You lied about your finances. And now you’re sitting here begging your wife like a coward because you got caught trying to steal from her.”

She turned her gaze toward me, her eyes red-rimmed and hollow. “I didn't know about the transfers. I swear to God, I didn't know he was moving stolen money into that Cayman account. He told me he inherited it from an uncle.”

“An uncle,” I repeated, letting out a dry, humorless chuckle. “Julian’s only uncle died twenty years ago leaving behind a modest pension and a collection of vintage stamps. You’re smart enough to be an executive assistant at a top tech firm, Chloe. Did you really think a man with a mid-six-figure salary could afford a luxury Back Bay loft, designer bags, and first-class flights to Miami without dipping into a hidden well?”

Chloe looked down at her lap, her face burning crimson as the reality of her own poor judgment settled over her like a heavy wool blanket. She had wanted luxury, she had wanted a shortcut into high society, and she had hitched her wagon to a man who was already burning his own life down to the ground.

“What happens when we land?” Chloe asked quietly, staring straight ahead at the seat pocket.

May you like

“When we land in Miami,” I said, opening my leather folder and pulling out a second set of printed documents, “two things are going to happen. First, Julian is going to walk off this aircraft alone. Second, my attorney’s local counsel in Florida is going to meet him at the gate with a federal subpoena and a notice of receivership for every single asset he tried to register in your joint shell corporation.”

Julian slumped back against his seat, closing his eyes as a heavy, defeated sigh rattled through his chest. The fight had entirely drained out of him. The arrogant, untouchable corporate climber was gone, leaving behind a terrified man who finally realized that actions have consequences, and that wealth earned through deceit is as fragile as glass.
