Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

Three months later.

The Texas heat had broken, replaced by the cool, crisp air of a beautiful autumn morning. The news of the Vega family scandal had occupied the local headlines for weeks; Rebecca had accepted a plea deal that included a mandatory three-year sentence and the permanent revocation of her educational credentials. My parents had received heavy fines, probation, and a complete social banishment from the community organizations they had valued more than their own flesh and blood.

I sat on the wooden bench of a quiet park on the outskirts of Austin, a cup of coffee in my hand.

A few feet away, Lily was playing in the autumn leaves. Her yellow dress had been replaced by a warm woolen sweater, and the bruises on her arm and face had long since faded, leaving her skin smooth and clear. She was laughing, her small hands throwing a pile of bright orange leaves into the air.

"She looks wonderful, Daniel," a soft voice said from behind me.

I turned to see Dr. Evans walking toward the bench, holding a folder of medical release forms. She sat down beside me, watching Lily play.

"She's sleeping through the night now," I said, taking a slow sip of my coffee. "She doesn't check the doors anymore. And she hasn't asked to apologize to anyone in months."

"You did the right thing, Daniel," Dr. Sarah said, handing me the final discharge papers from the pediatric counseling program. "Most families bury their secrets until the children are broken beyond repair. You broke the family to save the child."
