Chapter 7 - The Arrests

The execution of the warrants was swift and devoid of the dignity my family had spent decades cultivating.
Rebecca was handcuffed in the middle of the living room, her tears ruining her expensive makeup as the officers led her out past the deflated pink balloons. My mother stood by the window, sobbing uncontrollably as my father was read his rights for accessory after the fact and obstruction of justice.
"This isn't over, Daniel!" my father shouted as he was led toward the police vehicle, his hands secured behind his back. "You won't get a single cent of the family inheritance! I’ll dismantle your logistics firm brick by brick! You’re dead to this family!"
"I died two years ago when Claire passed, Dad," I said, standing on the porch as the red and blue emergency lights flashed against the stone walls of their house. "The only thing left is the promise I made to her. And tonight, I kept it."

The police cruisers pulled away from the curb, their sirens fading into the distance, leaving the suburban street quiet once more.
I walked back into the house one last time, went to the master control panel in the kitchen, and permanently deactivated the entire security grid. I threw the master router into my briefcase, locked the front door behind me, and drove back toward the hospital without looking back.
