Chapter 6 - The Legal Shield

The sound of distant police sirens began to cut through the quiet suburban night, growing louder with every passing second.

Rebecca scrambled off the sofa, grabbing my jacket with both hands, her fingernails digging into the fabric. "Daniel, please! Delete it! If the school board sees this, I’ll lose my license! I’ll lose my house! Sophie will be ruined! I was just stressed... the party was too much, and she wouldn't stop crying!"

"Let go of me," I said, my voice completely cold as I peeled her fingers away from my chest.

"Daniel, he's your sister!" my mother wept, dropping to her knees beside the coffee table. "We did it to protect the family name! Think of your father's legacy! Think of what this will do to our standing in the community!"

"Your standing?" I laughed, a bitter, hollow sound that echoed through the house. "You watched a five-year-old girl bleed behind a washing machine and your first thought was the country club roster. You didn't just fail as grandparents, Helen. You failed as human beings."

The front door opened, and three Austin Police officers stepped into the foyer, led by a detective with a serious, unhurried expression.

"Mr. Daniel Vega?" the detective asked, looking between us.

"Yes, Detective," I said, picking up the tablet and handing it to him. "This is the full digital record of the physical assault on my daughter, Lily Vega, and the subsequent tampering with evidence by the property owners."
