Chapter 5 - The Unveiling

"I don't need the judge to believe my word, Dad," I said, pulling my tablet from my leather briefcase and setting it flat on the coffee table between them. "I have the visual data."
Rebecca laughed, a high, mocking sound. "The backyard camera doesn't show anything inside the house, Daniel. I know where the blind spots are. I'm not stupid."
"You're right, Rebecca. The backyard camera doesn't show the inside," I said, tapping the play button on the tablet screen. "But the digital clock above the washing machine does."
The 4K video began to play. The audio of Rebecca’s screams and the distinct, physical impact of her hand against Lily’s face filled the elegant living room, shattering the comfortable silence they had built around their lie.
My mother’s hands flew to her mouth, a sharp, choked gasp escaping her throat. Rebecca’s defiance evaporated instantly; she went completely rigid, her eyes wide and fixed on the screen as she watched herself strike my daughter.
But the real blow landed when the video continued, showing my mother and father entering the room, wiping the fingerprints, and orchestrating the cover-up.

"You... you set a trap," my father whispered, his voice shaking as he looked up from the screen, his face an ashen, sickly gray.
"I didn't set a trap, Dad. I installed security for your protection," I said, leaning down until I was inches from his face. "But it turns out, the only monsters my daughter needed protection from were the ones who raised me."
