Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The fallout across Chicago’s high-society and corporate circles was nothing short of catastrophic.
Within forty-eight hours, every major newspaper and financial publication picked up the story. The headlines were a PR nightmare for Richard’s remaining associates and Vanguard Global:
STERLING INTERNATIONAL CO-CEO ARRESTED IN MASSIVE WHITE-COLLAR FRAUD SCANDAL. FED INVESTIGATION UNCOVERS INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE AND EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME. DISGRACED EXECUTIVE FACES ADDITIONAL CHARGES OF MEDICAL FALSIFICATION AND ASSAULT.
Chloe, meanwhile, found herself entirely abandoned. Stripped of her social standing, locked out of Marcus’s estate by ironclad prenuptial agreements, and radioactive within her elite social circles, she attempted to reach out to me twice through tearful voicemails begging for mercy.
I blocked her number on the first ring. Mercy was a luxury reserved for people who possessed a conscience.
With Richard locked away without bail awaiting trial due to his severe flight risk, my legal team moved with lightning speed to dismantle every remaining vestige of his influence within Sterling International. We executed emergency shareholder buybacks, nullified his fraudulent voting trust allocations, and restored my absolute controlling majority stake in the company.
Three weeks after the arrest, I sat in my private home office late at night, reviewing the newly consolidated asset portfolios.
The house was quiet again—not the suffocating, tense silence of a marriage built on lies, but the clean, peaceful quiet of a sanctuary reclaimed.
My phone buzzed on the mahogany desk.
It was an unknown number, routed through the prison visitation switchboard.
I stared at the screen for several seconds before tapping the accept button and putting it on speaker.
“Victoria?” Richard’s voice sounded thin, cracked, and thoroughly broken, echoing off the concrete walls of the federal holding facility.
“I’m here, Richard,” I said calmly, signing a final audit report with my fountain pen.
“Please... you have to call your lawyers off the medical assault charge,” he pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation. “The prosecutors are saying they’re adding another ten years to my sentence for the falsified proxy documents and the surgical authorization. I’ll lose everything. I’ll die in a federal penitentiary.”
“You already lost everything the moment you decided to treat my life, my body, and my family as your personal stepping stones,” I replied steadily.
“Victoria, we were married! We shared a bed!”
“And you shared my sister-in-law while stealing my company and destroying my biological future,” I retorted, my voice freezing into a sharp, unyielding edge. “You didn't want a wife, Richard. You wanted a stepping stone, a vault, and a patsy. You built a house of cards entirely out of arrogance and deceit, and the moment a gentle breeze hit it, you collapsed.”
“You’re a monster,” he snarled, a final, desperate flash of his old malice breaking through. “You set me up with that glue! You planned this whole thing!”

“No, Richard,” I corrected softly. “I simply handed you the rope. You were the one who enthusiastically tied the noose.”
I hung up the phone, disconnected the line permanently, and watched the dark screen go black.
