Chapter 6 - The Fall of an Empire

The arrest was executed with clean, clinical precision.
Before Richard could even open his mouth to protest, federal agents stepped behind his chair, pulled his arms behind his back, and snapped cold steel handcuffs around his wrists. The heavy metallic click echoed off the glass walls of the boardroom, a sound of absolute, irreversible finality.
“You can’t do this,” Richard muttered, his voice cracking as he was hauled to his feet, his expensive Italian suit jacket bunching awkwardly around his shoulders. He turned his desperate, pleading eyes toward me. “Victoria! Please! We were husband and wife! Think of what this does to the company’s stock price, think of the public scandal—”
“I am thinking about the company, Richard,” I said, standing up slowly from my chair and smoothing down the front of my Chanel blazer. “That’s why I called the FBI before I poured my morning coffee. As for the stock price, Wall Street historically loves it when a corrupt, parasitic executive gets cleanly excised from the ledger.”
“You’re a cold, unfeeling bitch,” Richard spat out, venom dripping from his words as the agents guided him toward the exit.
“No, Richard,” I replied, my voice dropping into a quiet, lethal register. “I’m a survivor. And you just learned the hard way what happens when you mistake a quiet woman for a weak one.”
As the heavy glass doors closed behind him, dragging him away toward a federal holding cell and a guaranteed multi-year prison sentence, the tension in the boardroom dissipated like smoke.
Marcus let out a long, shuddering breath, dropping his head into his hands. “Well,” he muttered softly. “That certainly beats filing for a standard no-fault divorce.”
“We’re not done yet, Marcus,” I said, walking back to my seat and picking up a second, thinner file folder from the stack.
Marcus looked up, frowning. “What else is in there? You already got him arrested for corporate espionage and embezzlement.”
“That was just the business side,” I said, sliding the medical documentation across the table toward my brother. “Read this.”
Marcus picked up the Zurich clinic records. As his eyes scanned the clinical notes detailing the unauthorized tubal ligation performed behind my back under a forged power of attorney, the color drained entirely from his face. His hands began to shake so violently he dropped the papers back onto the table.
“My God,” Marcus whispered, horror washing over his features. “He... he did this to you? He sterilized you?”
“Without my knowledge, without my consent, while I was under general anesthesia,” I said quietly, feeling the cold, familiar armor settling back around my heart. “The corporate crimes put him in federal prison. But this? This is a felony assault charge of the highest order. My legal team has already filed an emergency addendum with the district attorney’s office.”

Marcus looked up at me, his eyes shining with unshed tears. “Vic... I am so, so sorry. I brought him into this family. I introduced him to you.”
“You didn't know, Marcus,” I said gently, reaching across the table to squeeze his hand. “None of us knew. But we are going to finish this together.”
