Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Tyler's Empire

While my family scrambled in a blind panic to figure out how to replace the missing funds, Dan Mercer and I were busy dismantling the rest of their house of cards.
It turned out that Tyler—Brianna’s golden-boy fiancé—wasn't the successful tech entrepreneur he pretended to be at Sunday dinners.
According to the financial forensic reports Dan delivered to my bedside table that evening, Tyler’s entire consulting firm was a front for a high-risk crypto-lending scheme that was currently under federal investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The $175,000 siphoned from my condo sale wasn't just being used for wedding centerpieces; it was being used to plug a massive margin call in Tyler’s personal trading portfolio.
"He was using your condo as a personal ATM to bail himself out of bankruptcy," Dan explained, flipping through a stack of bank statements. "If your father hadn't forged that deed, Tyler’s company would have collapsed last week. By stealing your equity, they bought him three more weeks of freedom."
"And the wedding?" I asked.
"Dead in the water," Dan smirked. "The country club terminated their contract permanently after the bounced wire, and word travels fast among high-end vendors in Denver. No one in the state is going to touch them without cash-in-hand escrow verification."
My phone buzzed on the tray table.
An incoming call from an unknown number.
I swiped to answer and put it on speaker.
"Maddie? It's Tyler."
The voice on the other end didn't sound arrogant anymore. It sounded small, desperate, and frantic.
"Tyler," I acknowledged neutrally.
"Look, Maddie, let's be reasonable adults here," Tyler babbled nervously. "This whole legal mess is getting completely out of hand. If you drop the fraud charges and let us keep the condo sale proceeds, I'll... I'll make sure Brianna lets you attend the rehearsal dinner. We can smooth everything over!"
I couldn't help it. I laughed. A genuine, bright laugh that made my stitches pull slightly, reminding me of my surgery, but feeling infinitely better than any pain medication.
"Tyler, let me explain something to you very clearly," I said, my voice dripping with icy amusement. "I don't want an invitation to your rehearsal dinner. I don't want to smooth things over. And I certainly don't want to negotiate with a con artist who uses my family as pawns to cover his bad trades."
"You can't do this!" Tyler snapped, his fake polite mask shattering instantly. "I'll sue you for defamation! I'll ruin your career!"
May you like
"My career is in medical billing compliance, Tyler. I review federal fraud cases for a living," I replied sweetly. "Good luck explaining your shell companies to the federal magistrate."
I hung up the phone and blocked his number.
