Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Spine

Six months later, the physical therapy sessions had paid off.

The titanium rods in my spine were fully fused, and while I still carried a faint, silvery scar down the center of my back, my posture was straighter, stronger, and more unyielding than it had ever been.

I was promoted to Senior Director of Compliance at my medical firm, doubling my salary and giving me the financial security to establish a pro-bono legal fund for vulnerable patients facing medical and estate fraud.

My family had drifted entirely out of my orbit.

I heard through distant relatives that Tyler had been indicted on three counts of wire fraud, my father had taken early retirement to avoid a corporate ethics investigation, and Brianna had moved across the country to start over under a different name.

They had tried to break me while I was unconscious on a hospital table, believing that a woman recovering from spine surgery had no strength left to fight back.

They had miscalculated.

On a crisp autumn evening, I stood on my condo balcony, holding a cup of hot tea and looking out at the glittering mountain horizon. The air was cool, clean, and entirely my own.

My back didn't ache. My home was secure. And my life was finally built on a foundation that no one could ever forge away.
