Chapter 5 - The Emergency Family Summit

By 4:00 PM that afternoon, the quiet peace of my hospital room was shattered by the sound of running footsteps echoing down the linoleum hallway.

The door burst open.

My father stumbled in first, his face purple with rage, his tie loosened, and his hair standing on end. Right behind him came my mother, sniffling loudly into a crumpled tissue, and my sister Brianna, wearing a designer bridal track suit that cost more than my first medical deductible.

Brianna looked like she was about five seconds away from a complete nervous breakdown. Her mascara was running down her cheeks, and her hands were clawing frantically at the air.

"What did you do?!" Brianna shrieked, lunging toward my bed before Rosa, the nurse, stepped directly in her path with a stern, immovable expression. "You ruined my wedding! All the vendors just canceled! The venue management escorted us off the property! Tyler is threatening to call off the engagement because his shell company accounts were frozen by the SEC!"

"Good for Tyler," I said evenly, not even flinching as I took a sip of water from my straw.

"Maddie, have you lost your absolute mind?!" Richard roared, slamming his fist against the foot of my hospital bed so hard the monitors beeped in protest. "That was your sister's wedding! We raised you, we fed you, we put a roof over your head! And you call the police on your own flesh and blood?!"

"You didn't put a roof over my head, Dad," I corrected him, my voice cutting through his shouting like a scalpel. "I bought that condo with my own money. Every single dollar of the $425,000 equity came from my bank account, earned through sixty-hour work weeks while you sat at home complaining about your retirement portfolio."

"We are your family!" Linda wailed, dabbing her dry eyes. "Family shares everything! What's yours is ours!"

"Stealing my house while I'm unconscious under general anesthesia isn't 'sharing,' Mom," I said, my gaze hardening into ice. "That's grand larceny. And the only reason you're standing in this hospital room instead of a holding cell downtown is because my lawyer convinced the district attorney to hold off on your arrest warrants until you return every single cent of the unauthorized escrow transfer."

Brianna let out a high-pitched, hysterical shriek. "Return it?! We spent $40,000 on the non-refundable catering deposit and the custom dress! We don't have it!"

"Then you and Tyler better figure out how to liquidate his crypto portfolio or sell his luxury BMW," I replied coldly. "Because if that money isn't back in the escrow holding account by 9:00 AM tomorrow, the warrants go active, and the whole family gets to watch Dad spend his golden years behind iron bars."

Richard turned a terrifying shade of pale. He stared at me—really stared at me—for the first time in his life, realizing that the quiet, compliant daughter he had spent decades dismissing was no longer someone he could manipulate.
