Chapter 6 - The Cleansing

The next morning, the sun rose over Coyoacán, casting a bright, warm light over the stone walls of Valeria’s home.
A massive moving truck was parked outside. A team of professional cleaners, paid for with the remaining funds in Valeria’s private, untouched account, were busy dismantling the wedding arch, packing up the rented chairs, and scrubbing the terrace.
Valeria stood in the kitchen, drinking a cup of black coffee. The house felt quiet, but it was a clean, peaceful quiet she hadn't felt in years.
The front door opened, and her cousin, Mateo, walked in carrying a cardboard box. Mateo was a quiet, practical lawyer who had always warned Valeria about Rodrigo’s family.
"The news is everywhere, Vale," Mateo said, setting the box on the counter. "The Vargas group’s stock crashed fifty percent this morning. The banks are foreclosing on their offices in Polanco. It’s a total wipeout."
"Good," Valeria said, taking a sip of her coffee. "They built their empire on lies. It’s only fair it fell like one."

"And Camila?" Mateo asked.
"She’s currently out on bail," Valeria said. "But her family had to sell their apartment just to cover the legal retainer. She’s living in a tiny studio near the outskirts. No pearls. No satin."
