Chapter 3 - Ascent to the Penthouse

I stood up, took Sophia’s small hand in mine, and bypassed Chloe completely.
"Hey! You can't go up there!" Chloe shrieked, hurrying around the desk. "Security! Stop them!"
Two burly security guards in crisp black uniforms stepped out from the elevator alcove, crossing their arms to block our path. "Excuse me, ma'am, this floor and the penthouse gala are restricted to invited guests and executive personnel only. Do you have an invitation?"
I didn't answer with words. I simply reached into my coat pocket, pulled out a heavy, matte-black titanium card embossed with a single silver crest, and held it up.
The security guard took it, expecting a fake, but the moment his eyes caught the holographic serial number and the issuing seal of the Sterling Global Trust, his face went completely pale. His hands actually began to tremble.
"Th-This is..." he stammered, looking up at me with absolute terror.
"We are going up," I said softly.
The guard didn't hesitate for another second. He snapped to attention, pressed his own master keycard against the private elevator panel, and held the doors open, bowing slightly as Sophia and I stepped inside.
"Have a... a pleasant evening, Mrs. Sterling," he choked out.
The heavy mirrored doors slid shut, cutting off Chloe’s bewildered, panicked expression as the elevator began its rapid, silent ascent toward the thirtieth-floor penthouse.
Inside the glass-walled car, the city lights of Atlanta stretched out below us like a sea of distant stars. Sophia pressed her face against the glass, fascinated by the heights.
"Mommy, look how small the cars are!" she gasped, holding up her paper necklace. "Daddy’s going to love this view."
"Yes, baby," I murmured, watching my own reflection in the glass. "He's going to love it."
My phone vibrated in my clutch. A single text message from Victor: Primary credit lines frozen. Corporate restructuring initiated. All Meridian account routing redirected to Sterling Trust escrow. Ten minutes until public trading halts.
I locked the phone and slipped it back into my bag.

Ten minutes.
That was all the time it took for an empire built on lies to turn back into dust.
