The legal battles dragged on for months. Claire had to testify in front of grand juries, and Dominic was under constant watch by federal authorities. The stress was immense.
But the biggest threat wasn't the law. It was the resentment of those who lost their power when the hospital board fell.
Anonymous threats arrived in the mail. Tires were slashed. A fire was set in the mansion’s garage.
They were being tested.
One night, Claire found a note tucked into the nursery’s door frame: The boy is not safe, and neither are you.
She kept it from Dominic. She didn't want to trigger his protective rage, which always led to more violence. She decided to handle this on her own.
She researched the threat, finding connections to a disgruntled former investor in the hospital board—a man named Vance, who had lost millions when the scandal broke.
She tracked him down, using her own ingenuity, her own resources.
She went to his office, not with a gun, but with the proof of his involvement in the poisoning of the hospital supplies.
She left it on his desk, along with a note: Stop, or the police will have everything they need to put you away for the rest of your life.
Vance disappeared two days later.
