Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Titan

The aftermath of the battle in the woods brought the end of the board of directors. With the evidence Claire had gathered, and with the help of a disgruntled federal investigator who had finally seen enough, the entire leadership of St. Anne’s Medical Center was exposed for the systemic corruption and medical malpractice that had nearly cost Leo his life.
The news broke across the country. It was the scandal of the decade. Doctors, administrators, and investors were arrested.
But for Claire and Dominic, the war was far from over. They were cleared of the kidnapping charges, but they were still targets.
They returned to Chicago to face the music. They weren't hiding anymore. They had the truth, and they had each other.
They stepped out of the private jet and onto the tarmac at Midway, surrounded by media, by police, and by enemies.
Dominic took Claire’s hand.
“You ready?” he asked.
“I’ve never been more ready,” she said.
They walked toward the waiting world, a nurse who had broken every rule and the most feared man in the city.
The board members, those who hadn't fled, were in shackles. The hospital was under federal receivership. And at the heart of it all was a baby, a miracle, a boy who was growing stronger every day.
They faced the cameras. Dominic didn't speak. He left that to Claire.
“The law is not always the same as justice,” Claire said into the sea of microphones. “And medicine is not always the same as healing. Tonight, we start again.”
They left the airport and drove to the mansion.
It was home.
The rooms were still large, the ceiling still high, but the ghosts were gone.
They found Leo in the nursery, laughing at the shadows on the wall.
Dominic picked him up, holding him with a grace that surprised even him. He looked at Claire, his eyes filled with a love that had no name.
“We made it,” he said.

“We did,” Claire said.
They were a family, forged in the fires of survival.
