Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

The peace didn't last. In the Moretti world, peace is merely a tactical pause between skirmishes.
Leo’s health stabilized, but he began showing symptoms that weren't related to the initial toxin. He was lethargic, his temperature spiking at odd hours, his blood work returning with anomalies that defied standard pathology.
Claire knew what it was. It wasn't equipment; it was intentional.
Someone was poisoning the boy.
She began investigating the staff, the supply chain, the food, the water. She became a detective in a house of secrets. She found out that Dominic’s rivals weren't just attacking his business—they were targeting his legacy.
She gathered her evidence in the dark of night, the silence of the mansion becoming her sanctuary.
One evening, she caught the private chef, a man who had been with the family for twenty years, tampering with the baby’s formula.
The confrontation was violent, short, and bloody. Dominic’s security guards dragged the man away, but not before Claire had the truth.
The poison had come from inside.
She went to find Dominic. She found him in the basement, in a room that looked like a holding cell. He was cleaning a piece of machinery—a brutal, efficient instrument of war.
“The chef,” she said, her voice shaking. “He was doing it. But he wasn't working for a rival. He was working for the hospital board. Dr. Sterling paid him.”
Dominic stopped. The silence in the room was absolute. He didn't look up, but the air around him grew cold.
“Sterling,” he repeated.
“They couldn't let it be true,” Claire said. “They couldn't let it be true that a night nurse saved the baby they tried to kill. If Leo had died, it would have been a tragedy. If I saved him, it was a malpractice case that would ruin them all.”
Dominic stood up. He walked toward her, his eyes dark, his expression unreadable. “You exposed them, Claire.”
“I had to.”
He pulled her into his arms, a sudden, desperate movement. He kissed her, not with the grace of a lover, but with the raw, starving passion of a man who finally found someone worth fighting for.

“You are going to be the death of me,” he whispered against her skin.
“I’m the only one who can keep you alive,” she replied.
