Chapter 10 - The Dawn of a New Life
Years later.
The mansion was gone, sold and turned into a community center.
Dominic and Claire lived in a small, modest house on the outskirts of the city, near the clinic.
Leo was a young man, finishing his medical degree. He wanted to be a doctor, but not for the prestige or the money. He wanted to be a doctor for the same reason Claire had been a nurse.
One afternoon, Claire was sitting on the porch, reading a book, when she heard the sound of a car in the driveway.
Dominic walked out, his gray hair silver, his face lined with the years they had spent together.
“Leo’s home,” he said.
Leo stepped out of the car, followed by his own family.
It was a beautiful, chaotic scene of life, a testament to the miracle that had started in a hospital room in Chicago.
Claire looked at Dominic. She took his hand.
“We did it,” she said.
“We did,” he said.
They watched their son, their grandson, the life they had built in the ruins.
They were happy.
They were finally, completely, free.
The fear was a memory. The war was a story.
All that remained was the love, the strength, and the knowledge that, no matter what happens, no matter how broken the world may seem, there is always a way to heal.
