Chapter 5 - A New Foundation

Three months later, the autumn leaves had turned brilliant shades of gold and amber across the Tennessee landscape.
I was standing in the community garden I had personally funded in downtown Nashville, watching children run through the sprinkler systems and laughing as the cool water sprayed across their faces. Water used for joy, not for humiliation.
My phone buzzed in my pocket.
It was a text from Ethan: Coming by for Sunday dinner? I'm trying out that stew recipe you taught me.
I smiled, typing back a quick reply: Save room for apple pie. I'm bringing it.
As I walked out of the park and toward my car, I caught my reflection in the polished glass window of a boutique storefront. I was wearing a simple cotton sweater and comfortable walking shoes. No designer labels. No flashing jewelry to announce my net worth to the world.
Just me.
Life had taught me long ago that wealth is what you have in your bank account, but character is what remains when every title, dollar, and status symbol is stripped away.
