Chapter 3 - The Scramble for the Exit

Panic erupted like a bomb going off in a crowded room.
George Mitchell lunged forward, his face purple with rage and terror. "Ethan, wait! You can't be serious! This is a multi-million-dollar merger! You can't blow up months of negotiations over a... a misunderstanding with an eccentric family member!"
"An eccentric family member?" Ethan laughed, though there was zero humor in it. "George, my mother told you she was looking for me when she arrived. You didn't listen. You assumed because of a secondhand shirt and a grocery bag that she was sub-human. You showed your true colors—all of you."
Several of the investors from Chicago and Atlanta began backing away from the Mitchells immediately, frantically pulling out their phones to call their legal teams and distance themselves from a company about to experience a catastrophic public relations nightmare.
Patricia Mitchell burst into hysterical tears, grabbing at her daughter's arm. "Vanessa, do something! Fix this!"

"Mrs. Carter... I didn't know," Vanessa stammered, her voice cracking. "Please... I was stressed about the wedding. People say things they don't mean when they're overwhelmed. You... you can't ruin my life over a little water!"
I walked up to her, stopping just inches away. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to.
"A little water washes off, Vanessa," I said softly, looking straight into her terrified eyes. "Cruelty leaves a stain that never comes out. You thought you were kicking a beggar out of your paradise. Instead, you just exposed the empty, ugly soul resting underneath that expensive dress."
I turned away from her, ignoring her choked sob, and looked at my son.

"Let's go home, Ethan. I think we've seen quite enough of the entertainment."
Ethan nodded, wrapping his arm around my wet shoulders to shield me from the staring crowd, and guided me toward his waiting car. Behind us, the Belle Meade estate was descending into absolute, irreversible chaos—shouting matches between ruined business partners, weeping socialites, and flashbulbs from a local blogger who had somehow slipped through the gates and captured the entire meltdown on camera.
