Chapter 4 - The Aftermath

By evening, the digital storm had already broken.
Within four hours of the incident, the video recorded by my phone—along with supplemental footage from one of the caterers who had grown disgusted by the Mitchells' behavior—was uploaded to social media.
The internet didn't just cancel Vanessa Mitchell; it obliterated her.
By midnight, "Belle Meade Bridezilla" was the number one trending topic nationwide. Financial blogs picked up the story of Carter Global severing ties with Mitchell Enterprises, sending Mitchell stock into a vertical freefall before the opening bell on Monday morning. George Mitchell was forced to resign as CEO of his own company within forty-eight hours, and their lavish wedding venue cancelled their reservation, citing "breach of community standards."
Meanwhile, back at my home—a quiet, sprawling estate nestled in the rolling hills outside Nashville—the atmosphere couldn't have been more different.
I sat at my solid oak kitchen table wearing a warm, dry flannel bathrobe, sipping a mug of hot chamomile tea.
Ethan sat across from me, rubbing his temples with a weary sigh.
"I'm sorry, Mom," Ethan muttered for the tenth time that evening. "I should have vetted her better. I should have seen through the polished exterior."
I reached across the table and patted his hand.
"You're a businessman, Ethan, not a magician. People like Vanessa spend their entire lives perfecting the art of wearing a mask for the people who matter, and treating everyone else like dirt beneath their shoes," I said calmly. "The only mistake you made was not bringing me along sooner."
Ethan let out a short, genuine laugh. "Next time, I'll let you do background checks on all my dates using a garden hose."
"It's a very effective diagnostic tool," I smiled.

My phone buzzed on the table. It was an email notification from my corporate legal team. George Mitchell had sent a desperate, groveling settlement offer, begging for a meeting to salvage what was left of their corporate partnership.
I pressed Delete without even opening it.
