Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Mask

The glass champagne flute slipped from Ethan’s fingers, shattering against the stone patio with a sharp, explosive crack that instantly silenced the murmuring crowd.

Liquid amber splashed across the pristine white tiles. But Ethan didn't look at the broken glass. He didn't look at the champagne soaking into his custom Italian leather shoes. His eyes were locked entirely on me—dripping wet, kneeling in the grass, clutching a frayed grocery tote.

"Mom?"

The single word cut through the humid afternoon air like a razor blade.

Silence descended on the lawn so absolute you could hear the distant hum of traffic on Belle Meade Boulevard. The thirty elegant guests—investors, socialites, and high-society elites—froze mid-laugh, mid-sip, and mid-whisper.

Vanessa Mitchell spun around, her laughter dying instantly in her throat. She looked at Ethan, then back at me, her face twisting into a mask of stunned confusion.

"Ethan, darling, what did you call her?" Vanessa asked, forcing a brittle, nervous laugh as she stepped toward him. "That... that's just some unhinged drifter who wandered off the highway and crashed your party. Security is already—"

"Shut up, Vanessa," Ethan whispered.

It wasn't a shout. It was a cold, terrifying rasp that made even George and Patricia Mitchell step back in alarm.

Ethan didn't wait for an explanation. He strode across the pristine lawn, completely ignoring the muddy turf, and dropped to his knees right beside me in the wet grass. He didn't care that his custom navy suit was getting ruined. He gently took my shivering hands in his.

"Mom... what happened to you? Why are you—who did this?"

His voice broke on the last word as his eyes tracked the steady stream of water still dripping from my hair and soaking my secondhand shirt.

Before I could answer, Patricia Mitchell hurried over, her face flushing a deep, mottled red.

"Ethan, sweetie, you must be hallucinating from the heat!" Patricia babbled, offering a tight, frantic smile as she tried to pull him up by his elbow. "This woman is an absolute impostor. She trespassed, she harassed us, and she tried to steal—"

"She is Margaret Carter," Ethan said, standing up slowly.

He didn't yell. He stood at his full height, towering over Patricia, George, and Vanessa, his eyes burning with a fury I had only ever seen when someone tried to cheat him in the boardroom.

"She is the sole surviving founder and majority shareholder of Carter Global Holdings," Ethan continued, his voice echoing across the courtyard. "The woman you just sprayed with a garden hose, mocked, humiliated, and ordered off the property... is the woman who funded this entire estate, financed your company's bailout, and owns the very land you are standing on."

The color drained entirely from Patricia's face. She looked like she had just been struck by lightning.

Beside her, George Mitchell staggered backward, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

And Vanessa? Vanessa looked as though the ground had literally opened up beneath her feet.

"No," Vanessa whispered, shaking her head violently, her diamond studs catching the afternoon sun as she backed away. "No, that's impossible. She... she was holding a grocery bag! She was wearing clothes from a secondhand store! She looked like a beggar!"

I slowly stood up, brushing the wet grass from my knees, and gently unzipped the water-resistant sleeve of my grocery tote.

I didn't pull out a weapon. I pulled out my phone.

With a single tap, I hit play.

Instantly, the high-definition speakers of my phone began broadcasting every single word, every cruel laugh, and every vicious decree across the courtyard.

“Look at her! She walked in here like she belonged. What's next? Is she going to beg for an invitation to the wedding?”

“Get her off the property before she ruins the pictures.”

“And search her bag before she leaves. We don't want anything disappearing.”

“In this house, I’m the one who makes the rules. His wife is only good for giving birth and washing dishes—” wait, no, that was the other nightmare mother. But Vanessa's words were just as damning: “Please. Now the homeless woman wants to lecture us about morals.”

The audio rang out crystal clear, magnified by the acoustic openness of the lawn. Every single guest heard it. Every single investor heard it.

Vanessa froze, staring at the little glowing screen in my hand as if it were a venomous snake.

"You wanted to know if I was going to beg for an invitation, Vanessa," I said smoothly, stepping forward as water dripped from my hem onto the stone patio. "Let me assure you. After seeing how you treat human beings when you think no one of importance is watching... you couldn't pay me to attend your wedding."

Ethan turned to face the stunned crowd of financiers and social elites who had traveled from Dallas, Chicago, and Atlanta.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Ethan announced, his voice steady and lethal. "The engagement is officially canceled. And as for Carter Global's partnership with Mitchell Enterprises... effective immediately, every contract is terminated."
