Chapter 8 – The Storm That Tested Everything
Nearly twenty years had passed since the day a fearless little girl changed one man's heart.
Jagalki Market had become the pride of the city.
Then, one autumn night, disaster struck.
Relentless rain poured for three days without stopping. Before dawn, the nearby river overflowed, sending muddy water rushing through the market streets.
By sunrise, dozens of stalls were underwater.
Wooden tables floated away.
Families watched helplessly as years of hard work disappeared beneath the flood.
Pretty, now the city's chief civil engineer, arrived before the emergency crews.
She studied the damaged drainage system.
"We can save most of it," she said.
"But we have to act now."
Minutes later, another familiar black SUV pulled up.
Alex stepped out.
His hair had turned silver, but his eyes still carried the same quiet determination.
Without waiting for reporters or photographers, he picked up a shovel.
"If we're rebuilding," he said with a smile,
"I'm starting here."
Within hours, hundreds of volunteers filled the market.
Shop owners.
Students.
Police officers.
Construction workers.
No one asked who was rich or poor.
They simply worked together.
As she watched Alex clearing mud beside teenagers young enough to be his grandchildren, Pretty smiled.
"Looks like your home training is finally complete."
