Chapter 5 - The Silver Bird

Dominic dropped down into the archives, his heart hammering against his ribs. He needed to find Mia. He had left her and Harper in the tunnels, but they weren't safe—not with the entire house being systematically swept.

He navigated the dark, dusty corridors of the house's skeletal structure. He reached the end of the tunnel where he had hidden them, but the space was empty. A single item lay on the floor: the silver bird pendant.

He picked it up, his thumb brushing against a tiny, almost invisible latch on the bird's wing. It clicked open. Inside was a micro-SD card—so small it was almost transparent.

He looked at the wall. A message had been scratched into the stone, likely by Mia with her fingernails: The Chapel. He’s taking her there.

The realization hit him like a physical blow. The old private chapel on the north side of the estate. It was where his first wife was buried. It was the only place Nathan knew Dominic would come, no matter the danger. It was a trap, a lure to draw him out into the open.

Dominic looked at the pendant again. He understood now. The silver bird wasn't just jewelry; it was a key. It was the physical component required for a high-security vault in the city—a vault he had never used, a vault that likely held the proof of Elena’s murder. Mia hadn't just stumbled upon a kidnapping; she had found the one piece of evidence that could link Nathan and Claire to the fire seventeen years ago.

He checked his ammo. Three rounds left in his magazine.

He stood up, his face hardening into a mask of cold, calculated fury. He wasn't going to hide anymore. He wasn't going to play the game of cat and mouse. He was going to the chapel. He was going to finish the seventeen-year-old war that had started with a car crash and would end with a reckoning.

He emerged from the tunnel exit into the freezing night air. The chapel stood at the edge of the cliffs, illuminated by the pale moonlight. He could see guards pacing the perimeter, their flashlights dancing like fireflies in the dark.

He took a deep breath, checked the chamber of his weapon, and began to move. Every step was deliberate, every breath controlled. He was Dominic Vale, and for the first time in a decade, he was truly free of the burdens of his own empire. He was ready to burn it all down to save the only people who mattered.
