Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledger

The kitchen was a labyrinth of shadows, and Dominic moved through it like a predator reclaiming his territory. He didn’t emerge from the trapdoor; instead, he reached up, grabbed the heavy iron handle of a frying pan hanging from the pot rack, and hurled it across the room. It clattered violently against the copper sinks.

The two guards spun, their flashlights cutting through the darkness. In that split second, Dominic vaulted out of the floor, his movements fluid and efficient. He didn't fire his weapon; he closed the distance instantly. A brutal strike to the temple of the first guard rendered him unconscious before he could scream. The second guard turned, his weapon raised, but Dominic caught his wrist, twisting it with a sickening crunch of bone. The man collapsed with a muffled groan, the pistol clattering to the granite floor.

Dominic didn’t linger to finish them. He dragged them into the pantry, stripped their comms gear, and donned one of their earpieces.

“…sector four is clear. Checking the mudroom now,” a voice crackled in his ear. It was Marcus.

Dominic leaned against the cold cabinets, listening to the tactical chatter of his own men—men he had trusted with his life for a decade. He realized then that Nathan hadn’t just recruited a few disgruntled employees; he had spent years infiltrating the inner circle. He had been pruning the loyalists, replacing them with mercenaries loyal only to the highest bidder.

Dominic made his way to his private office, a room protected by a biometric lock. He pressed his thumb against the scanner. Access Denied.

A cold smile touched his lips. Nathan had changed the security protocols. He tapped into the internal system via his handheld device, overriding the lock with a legacy code he had written years ago—a backdoor he’d kept for himself, never telling a soul. The door clicked open.

Inside, the office was pristine, save for the fact that his primary desktop was missing. He didn't care about the computer. He moved to the grand mahogany bookshelf, pulling a specific volume of history—the memoirs of a bygone era. A hidden compartment slid open, revealing a manual ledger.

He flipped through the pages. It wasn't a list of names; it was a map of his own downfall. There were entries for every major transaction for the last seventeen years. He saw dates, offshore account numbers, and cryptic notes in Nathan’s handwriting. He traced the lines back to the year his first wife, Elena, had died.

There, tucked in the margin, was a note in Latin: Ad astra per aspera—To the stars through difficulties. Below it, a signature: Claire.

Dominic’s blood turned to ice. Claire hadn't been a recent arrival. She had been embedded in his life long before he met her at that gala. She was the one who had cleared the path for Nathan, the silent hand guiding his "brother" to dismantle the Vale empire from within. They hadn't just betrayed him; they had curated his life for nearly two decades.
