The final trial for the Mitchells took place in the winter. We didn't attend—there was no need to watch them crumble. But the news reports were constant.
George Mitchell was sentenced to ten years for fraud. Vanessa, stripped of her inheritance and her social standing, had vanished into the obscurity she had once mocked in others.
"Do you ever feel sorry for her?" Ethan asked me, holding a newspaper.
