Chapter 3 - THE AFTERMATH

The expulsion was swift. By the time I had been taken inside and warmed with a hot tea in the study, the grounds were empty of the Mitchell family. The roses still bloomed, the chandeliers still glowed, but the atmosphere had shifted from a celebration of vanity to a somber reflection of values.

Ethan sat across from me, his head in his hands. "I should have known, Mother. I should have seen through it. She was so charming when we were out... when it was just the two of us."

"People like that are always charming to those they think are equals, Ethan," I said, sipping the tea. "The real test is how they treat the invisible people. The server you almost fired today—the one who wanted to help me? Keep an eye on him. That’s a man with a future."

"I will," Ethan promised.

But the damage to his reputation was the primary concern of the board. By morning, the story was leaking. Not the story the Mitchells wanted—that I was a trespasser—but the video. My recording had been sent to the major news outlets before I had even finished my tea. The headline wasn't about the engagement, but about the cruelty of the elite.

Vanessa’s father, George Mitchell, attempted to call. Then he attempted to threaten. Then he attempted to bribe. All of it was recorded and forwarded to the SEC. It turned out that the Mitchell family’s wealth was built on a series of fraudulent shell companies—a detail Ethan had been too blinded by love to investigate.

"You didn't just break the engagement, Mother," Ethan said two days later, reading a report from his forensic accountants. "You opened a door that led straight to their downfall. They’ve been embezzling from their clients for years."

I didn't smile. I felt no joy in their destruction. I only felt the weight of the realization that my son had been moments away from binding his life to a parasite.
