Chapter 9 - The Choice
A year later.
Claire was no longer a cleaning lady. She was the Director of the new Abigail Reed Educational Center. She was thriving, her car was new, and Lily was in a top-tier private school.
Nathan came to visit her at the school, which was now filled with the sound of children laughing.
“It’s beautiful,” he said, standing in the courtyard.
“It is,” Claire agreed.
“I’m leaving for a trip to Europe tomorrow,” Nathan said, his voice unusually nervous. “I’m taking a sabbatical. I don't know how long I’ll be gone. Maybe a month. Maybe a year.”
Claire felt a strange pang in her chest. “We’ll miss you.”
“Would you come with me?” he asked.

Claire froze. “As your employee?”
“As my partner,” Nathan said, stepping closer. “Lily loves you, I love you, and I think Abigail would have loved you, too.”
