Chapter 7 - The Federal Interruption

Chaos erupted in the grand ballroom in less than a second.
High-society matrons shrieked and dropped their champagne flutes. Venture capitalists and politicians scrambled backward, tripping over silk gowns and gilt-edged chairs as federal marshals moved swiftly into formation, sealing all four exits of the ballroom.
Senator Arthur Hale pushed his way through the terrified crowd, his face purple with rage, his political authority radiating off him in waves.
“This is an outrage!” Senator Hale bellowed, pointing a shaking finger at Nathan. “You are out of your mind, Cole! My daughter is an engaged woman, a pillar of this community! You will have these armed thugs out of my sight this instant, or I will have the state attorney general strip your corporate licenses by midnight!”
Nathan didn't blink. He stood tall, his hands clasped behind his back, his expression as cold and immovable as a granite monument.
“Your daughter isn't a pillar of the community, Senator,” Nathan replied, his voice cutting cleanly through the uproar. “She’s an operative for a corporate takeover scheme funded by your own political action committees. And the tea she brewed for me tonight has already been secured by federal forensics.”
He turned his head slightly toward the lead federal agent.
“Agent Vance, please secure the porcelain teapot on the service tray. And confiscate Ms. Hale’s handbag. You’ll find a secondary dropper vial containing synthetic neurotoxin inside her private cosmetics pouch.”
Vanessa let out a sharp, choked gasp. She stumbled backward, her beautiful beaded gown catching on the leg of a mahogany table, nearly sending her crashing to the floor.
“It’s a lie! He’s insane!” Vanessa screamed, her perfect composure completely shattered, mascara running down her pale cheeks as she clawed at the air. “Daddy, do something! Make them stop!”
Senator Hale lunged forward, grabbing his daughter’s arm, but before he could speak, Agent Vance stepped between them, holding up a clear evidence bag containing the silver-capped dropper bottle retrieved from Vanessa’s purse.
“Ms. Hale, you have the right to remain silent,” Agent Vance recited coolly, snapping the steel handcuffs around her wrists. “Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”
The flashbulbs of hidden paparazzi—tipped off by Nathan’s legal team an hour earlier—began exploding from the gallery doors, capturing every agonizing second of the billionaire heiress being led away in designer silk and steel cuffs.
Senator Hale stood frozen in the center of the empty space, realizing with sickening certainty that his political dynasty had just imploded on national television.
Amidst the screaming, the flashing cameras, and the scrambling reporters, Nathan didn't look at the politicians or the federal agents.
He looked down toward the service entrance.
His eyes found mine.
Then he looked at Sophia, who was still clutching her coloring book, watching the chaos with wide, solemn eyes.
Nathan walked across the ruined ballroom, ignoring the press and the bewildered guests, and stopped right in front of us.
He knelt down on one knee, ignoring the spilled champagne soaking into the knees of his expensive trousers.
He looked at my daughter.
And using hands that were finally steady, clear, and completely poison-free, Nathan Cole signed four words very carefully:
THANK YOU, SOPHIA. GOOD.
Sophia blinked, a slow, proud smile spreading across her face.
May you like
She signed back:
WELCOME.
