Chapter 6 - The Rehearsal Dinner

The rehearsal dinner on Tuesday night was staged in the grand ballroom, a glittering spectacle of crystal chandeliers, silver candelabras, and expensive champagne.

Two hundred of Boston’s elite mingled beneath the vaulted ceilings, laughing, clinking glasses, and offering loud, artificial toasts to the upcoming union of Cole and Hale.

I stood near the service entrance with Sophia seated quietly on a velvet bench beside me, coloring in a new sketchbook Nathan had secretly bought her earlier that afternoon.

Across the room, Nathan stood near the head table, wearing an immaculate black tuxedo. He looked strong, composed, and entirely healthy—a deliberate illusion maintained by weeks of purging the neurotoxin and substituting harmless herbal infusions under the radar.

Vanessa was a vision in a beaded, off-the-shoulder gown that cost more than my annual salary. She floated from group to group, accepting congratulations with a radiant, modest smile, though her eyes kept darting back toward Nathan with a predatory intensity.

At 8:30 p.m., the traditional post-dinner tea service was brought out on a silver tray.

Vanessa personally poured the cups.

I watched from across the ballroom, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird.

She poured a cup of dark, fragrant herbal tea from a porcelain pot. As her back turned slightly toward the surrounding guests, her left hand dipped into the pocket of her gown, emerging with a tiny, silver-capped dropper bottle.

Two drops.

Fast. Precise.

She stirred the cup with a silver spoon, smiled sweetly, and carried the tray across the ballroom directly toward Nathan.

“For you, darling,” Vanessa said, her voice carrying clearly over the gentle murmur of conversation. “You look exhausted. You need your strength for the big day.”

Nathan looked down at the cup. Then he looked up at Vanessa.

The entire ballroom seemed to hold its breath.

Before Nathan could take the cup, a small yellow blur shot across the polished parquet floor.

Sophia.

She had slipped off her bench while I was distracted. Before I could move, she planted herself directly between Vanessa and Nathan, her small hands flying upward in a flurry of furious sign language.

NO! BAD WOMAN! POISON! KILL!

Vanessa’s face twisted with sudden, ugly fury. She snatched her hand back, the porcelain teacup rattling violently against the silver saucer.

“Get this mute brat out of here!” Vanessa snapped, her social mask cracking down the middle.

Several guests gasped at the harshness of her tone.

Nathan didn't hesitate. He stepped forward, scooping Sophia up into his arms with one fluid motion, protecting her against his chest.

“She speaks quite clearly, Vanessa,” Nathan said, his voice ringing out across the silent ballroom with the force of a falling anvil. “If you know how to listen.”

Vanessa’s color drained instantly. “Nathan, what are you—?”

“You’ve been brewing me some very interesting tea over the last six months, haven't you?” Nathan continued, his slate-gray eyes boring straight through her.

From the double doors of the ballroom, a sharp, metallic click echoed through the room.

Four men in dark federal suits stepped inside, followed by two uniformed state troopers and a middle-aged man holding a leather briefcase.

Senator Arthur Hale turned white as a sheet, stepping out from the crowd. “What is the meaning of this? Who authorized federal marshals in this house?”

Nathan set Sophia gently down beside me, stepping forward to meet the federal agents in the center of the ballroom.

“I did, Senator,” Nathan said, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. “For wire fraud, corporate conspiracy, and attempted murder.”
