Chapter 5 - The Trap is Set

By the following Wednesday, the tension inside the Cole mansion had reached a boiling point.
The media was already circling the estate like vultures. Tabloids had gotten wind of minor rumors regarding Nathan’s health, speculating whether the tech billionaire would be able to make it down the aisle or if the wedding of the year was headed for a dramatic collapse.
Senator Arthur Hale had arrived unannounced on Tuesday evening, closeted with Nathan and Vanessa in the private parlor for three hours. When the senator left, his face was carved from granite, and his security detail looked like men heading into a combat zone.
Down in the servants’ quarters, Sophia and I kept our heads down. But my daughter’s eyes were everywhere. She watched the comings and goings with the terrifying focus of a tactical operative.
On Thursday night, exactly one week before the scheduled wedding, Nathan managed to slip away to the basement laundry room while the rest of the household was occupied with a formal dinner party hosted by Vanessa for her bridesmaids.
The hum of the industrial washing machines covered our voices.
Nathan stood by the folding table, looking paler than usual, though his eyes were sharp.
“It’s accelerating,” Nathan whispered, leaning against the counter. “They’re increasing the dosage. Tonight at dinner, the tea tasted unusually bitter. I poured it into a thermos in my lap when Vanessa wasn't looking.”
He pulled a small, sealed glass vial out of his inner coat pocket and set it gently on the folding table.
“What is that?” I asked, staring at the amber liquid inside.
“Unadulterated neurotoxin concentrate,” Nathan said grimly. “My private lab tech analyzed a sample from the thermos this afternoon. It matches a restricted pharmaceutical compound used in advanced neurological research. Senator Hale’s pharmaceutical PAC funds three research labs in Cambridge that specialize in this exact chemical structure.”
My breath hitched. “They’re manufacturing it through a political shell company.”
“Exactly,” Nathan nodded. “Which means if I simply go to the local police, Senator Hale’s political connections in the state judiciary will bury the report within an hour, and I’ll be committed to a private psychiatric facility by morning under an emergency medical guardianship clause.”
“Then what do we do?” I asked, my hands gripping the edge of the table. “We can’t just wait for the wedding day.”
A slow, dangerous smile touched the corners of Nathan’s mouth.
“We don't wait,” Nathan said. “We use their own timeline against them. The wedding is scheduled for next Thursday at the estate chapel. Two hundred guests, federal judges, state senators, and the entire executive board of Cole Industries.”
He leaned closer, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper.
“On the morning of the wedding, before the ceremony begins, the board is scheduled to convene in my private office for a routine pre-nuptial asset ratification vote. That is the exact moment Vanessa plans to administer the final, heavy dose—enough to render me completely incapacitated during the ceremony so her father can present the emergency guardianship papers to the board.”

He tapped the glass vial on the table.
“We are going to let her put it in my cup. But we are going to make sure the right audience is watching when I take my first sip.”
