Chapter 10 - The Voice of the Wind

Two months later.
The spring rain had stopped, and the courtyard of the Naval Medical Center was filled with the sweet, fresh scent of blooming jasmine.
Admiral Arthur Vance sat on a bench in the sun, dressed in his pristine, double-starred dress whites, his shoulder fully healed and showing a full range of motion. Beside him sat Nora, holding a cup of hot tea.
There was no whiteboard between them today.
Instead, Arthur held a small tablet, using a high-speed text-to-speech application they had developed together for his public addresses. But as they sat in the quiet sunshine, he didn't use the machine.
He looked at Nora, his blue-gray eyes soft and filled with a deep, paternal warmth. He reached out, taking her hand and placing a small, polished brass compass into her palm.
"To help you find your way, Nora," Arthur said, his voice stronger now, the gravelly edges smoothed out by months of recovery and peace. "Though I think you already know exactly where you're going."
Nora smiled, her fingers closing over the warm metal of the compass. "I just follow the patients, Admiral."
May you like
"No," Arthur said, shaking his head gently. "You follow the humanity. Never let this place take that from you."
As the hospital shifts changed behind them, the rookie nurse who had been given a deaf patient as a cruel joke stood up to return to her ward. But she wasn't a rookie anymore. She was the anchor of the unit, the woman who had proven that in a world of endless, deafening noise, the most powerful thing you can ever do is choose to truly listen.
