Chapter 2 - The Silent Shield

The surgical suite was a blinding expanse of sterile steel and high-intensity overhead lights. Rear Admiral Arthur Vance—no relation to Nora, though the shared surname felt like a quiet omen in the bustling room—lay on the operating table. His breathing was shallow, his eyes darting frantically between the masked faces of the surgical team.

The anesthesiologist, a harried doctor named Charles Kim, held an oxygen mask, looking ready to force it over the Admiral's face.

"He's resisting the sedative, Vance," Dr. Kim said as Nora slipped through the double doors, a fresh surgical gown pulled hastily over her scrubs. "His heart rate is spiking to one-forty. We need him under now, or we risk an intraoperative stroke."

Nora didn't hesitate. She bypassed the doctors, placing herself directly in Arthur's line of sight. She didn't touch him yet. Instead, she held up the whiteboard, writing in bold, steady strokes:

I AM HERE. THIS IS DR. KIM. HE IS GOING TO PUT YOU TO SLEEP TO FIX YOUR SHOULDER. YOU WILL WAKE UP IN RECOVERY. I WILL BE THERE.

The Admiral’s eyes locked onto the board. The frantic, defensive tension in his jaw relaxed by a fraction. He reached out with his good left hand, his fingers tapping the word THERE on the board.

Nora nodded firmly, holding his gaze. She wrote:

NOD TO CONSENT.

The Admiral gave one firm, slow nod. He closed his eyes, allowing Dr. Kim to place the mask over his face. Within seconds, the monitors began to beep in a slow, rhythmic, stable cadence as the anesthesia took hold.

"Incredible," Dr. Kim murmured, looking at Nora with newfound respect. "I've never seen a trauma patient de-escalated that quickly without chemical restraints."

"He just wanted to know what was happening to him, Doctor," Nora said quietly.

As she walked back out of the surgical wing, she found Britt Holloway standing by the charge desk, talking in hushed, urgent tones with Dr. Harrison, the chief of trauma surgery. When Dr. Harrison saw Nora, his stern face softened.

"Nurse Vance," Harrison said, his voice echoing in the corridor. "I just received a call from the base commander. They want a full report on the Admiral's status, and they specifically asked who was managing his communication. I told them it was you."

Britt’s knuckles turned white where she gripped the edge of the counter. "Dr. Harrison, Nora is still on her introductory rotation. I was planning on reassigning the Admiral to a more senior staff member for post-op care to ensure compliance with military protocol."

"No," Dr. Harrison said, his tone leaving no room for negotiation. "The Admiral requested her. In our world, a two-star admiral gets what he asks for. Nurse Vance, you are officially assigned to Admiral Vance’s recovery team. Britt, coordinate her schedule to ensure she is on his shift."
