Chapter 8 - The Final Hand

For two long, agonizing seconds, the warehouse was dead silent.

Dawson stood motionless, holding his pistol, his eyes darting between Romanov, Marcus, and Sienna. His face was a mask of agonizing conflict.

"Drop it, Dawson!" Marcus hissed, drawing his own concealed weapon and pressing the cold barrel against the side of Romanov’s head.

Wait.

Every person in the warehouse froze.

Nikolai Romanov didn't flinch. Instead, a slow, knowing smirk spread across his scarred face.

Marcus pressed his gun harder into Romanov’s temple. "I said, drop the gun, Romanov! The deal is done, you've got the files, now finish him!"

Romanov chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound that echoed off the concrete walls. "Marcus, you truly are a greedy idiot. Did you really think the Bratva partners with corporate rats who betray their own blood?"

Marcus’s face drained of color. "What... what are you talking about?"

Before Marcus could react, Romanov’s two bodyguards smoothly shifted their assault rifles, locking the barrels directly onto Marcus’s chest.

And then, Dawson Moretti lowered his pistol. Not in defeat. But with a calm, calculated precision that sent a shockwave through the room.

"It’s over, Marcus," Dawson said, his voice dripping with ice. "The trap wasn't for Sienna. It was for you."

Sienna blinked back her tears, staring at Dawson in absolute disbelief. "You... you knew?"

Dawson turned his gaze toward her, his dark eyes softening with a wave of deep, unfiltered regret. He walked over, swiftly slicing through the zip-ties binding her wrists with a tactical pocketknife, pulling her gently up out of the chair and shielding her behind him.

"I knew there was a leak the moment the harbor numbers didn't add up three months ago," Dawson explained, never taking his eyes off the paralyzed, terrified face of his cousin. "Arthur traced the metadata back to an internal terminal registered under Marcus’s private key. But we couldn't arrest him without proof of a direct handoff to an outside syndicate."

"So you used me as bait?" Sienna whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of relief and lingering shock.

"I used a secure, isolated sandbox server that looked like the master vault," Dawson corrected softly, looking down at her with intense remorse. "I never thought Marcus would stoop low enough to kidnap you to force the handoff. If I had known..."

"You did good, boy," a gravelly voice echoed from the dark entrance of the warehouse.

Heavy footsteps approached. Vittorio Moretti stepped into the light, leaning on his ebony cane, flanked by a dozen heavily armed Moretti enforcers who flooded the warehouse from every exit, cutting off any escape route for the Bratva.

Marcus fell to his knees, his face white as paper, shaking uncontrollably as he looked up at his grandfather and his cousin. "Grandfather... please! I'm family! Dawson, you can't—"

"You traded our blood for Russian money and tried to frame an innocent woman," Vittorio said, his voice like a falling guillotine. "You are no longer family."

Romanov simply shrugged, raising his hands in mock surrender. "A calculated risk, Mr. Moretti. Business didn't work out today. We’ll negotiate another time."

"There wasn't another time, Nikolai," Dawson said coldly. He raised his pistol, aiming dead center at Marcus’s chest—then slowly lowered it, nodding to his grandfather’s guards. "Take him to the basement vaults. Let the federal prosecutors handle what's left of him."
