Chapter 5 - The Trap at the Marina

An hour later, the rain outside had turned into a torrential downpour, lashing against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse library.
Rachel sat on the settee, nursing a cup of hot chamomile tea that one of the housekeepers had respectfully brought her. Noah had finally fallen asleep, curled up under the heavy cashmere blanket, his thumb tucked securely in his mouth.
The heavy doors opened, and Luca walked back into the library. He had removed his reading glasses, and his jacket was buttoned tightly. He looked exhausted, but his eyes burned with a cold, focused fire.
“Is he... is he okay?” Rachel asked softly, not daring to wake her son.
“He’s sleeping peacefully,” Luca said, walking over and stopping a few feet away from her. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, secured manila envelope, placing it gently on the coffee table.
Rachel looked down at it. “What is this?”
“Your employment file from the Grand Marquette,” Luca said evenly. “Along with a certified check drawn from my personal corporate account, covering your rent, utilities, and grocery bills for the next five years. In full.”
Rachel stared at him, her breath catching in her throat. “I... I don't understand. Why are you doing this?”
“Because your son was used as a pawn in a war that had nothing to do with you,” Luca said, his voice uncharacteristically gentle. “Henderson used you to get to me. And because of that, you and Noah were put in mortal danger under my roof. This is compensation for that failure.”
“I don't want charity, Mr. Romano,” Rachel whispered, her chin lifting with quiet pride. “I just want to know my son and I are safe.”
“You are,” Luca assured her, his gaze unwavering. “Richard Henderson has already been apprehended trying to board a commuter ferry across the harbor. He is currently answering questions in a very secure basement room. By morning, the man who engineered this entire scheme—Julian Vance—will be sitting in a federal penitentiary facing twenty counts of corporate conspiracy and fraud.”
Rachel let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension of the past twelve hours finally draining out of her muscles. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over her lashes. “Thank you.”
“You don't need to thank me, Ms. Carter,” Luca said, turning toward the window as the city lights flickered across the rain-slicked glass. “If anything, I owe you an apology. My hotel was supposed to be a sanctuary. Instead, it became a battleground.”
Before Rachel could reply, the heavy doors opened once more. Marcus stepped inside, holding a secure encrypted phone.

“Boss,” Marcus said quietly. “Sofia just initiated the digital payload. Vance’s accounts have been frozen by federal marshals. The U.S. Attorney’s office just executed a search warrant on his corporate headquarters in downtown Boston.”
Luca gave a slow, satisfied nod. “It’s over.”
