Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Basement

The heavy oak doors of the library swung open fully, and Marcus—Luca’s head of security—stepped inside, his face pale and tight.

“Boss,” Marcus said, keeping his voice carefully modulated. “We locked down the perimeter. Every exit is sealed. Nobody leaves the property—guest, staff, or vendor—until we clear them.”

Luca turned away from Rachel and Noah, walking toward his massive mahogany desk near the floor-to-ceiling windows. “Did you check the security logs for the private elevator?”

“We pulled the digital keycard logs for the past thirty minutes,” Marcus replied, stepping closer and handing Luca a small tablet. “The elevator was overridden using a master-tier administrative override code from the basement service terminal.”

Rachel held Noah protectively in her lap, sitting on a velvet settee near the fireplace. The terror in her chest was slowly being replaced by a hot, burning anger. “Why would someone use my four-year-old son to send a message to a criminal?” she demanded, her voice shaking but fiercely protective.

Luca stopped walking. He turned around slowly, his dark eyes fixing on Rachel. There was no warmth in them, but there was an unexpected flicker of profound respect.

“I am not a criminal, Ms. Carter. I am a businessman,” Luca corrected quietly, his tone devoid of arrogance, stating it merely as an immutable law of physics. “And whoever lured your son up to this floor didn't do it to hurt him. They did it because they knew you work here, and they knew he would wander into a room where I happened to be reading.”

Rachel stared at him, uncomprehending. “That doesn't make any sense! Why would anyone want my little boy to end up sitting with you?”

“Because,” Luca said, walking slowly back toward them, “someone inside my organization—or inside this hotel administration—is trying to start a war. And they figured out that the easiest way to force my hand was to drag an innocent bystander directly into the crosshairs.”

Marcus cleared his throat uncomfortably. “Boss... we found something else on the basement cameras. Right before the boy went into the service stairwell.”

Luca’s gaze snapped to his head of security. “Show me.”

Marcus tapped the tablet, turning the screen toward Luca. A grainy black-and-white security camera feed played in fast-forward. It showed the shadowy concrete hallway of the basement employee locker rooms.

A figure in a sharp, tailored corporate suit—complete with a bright crimson silk tie—was kneeling down next to Noah, pointing toward the open door of the service stairs. The man’s face was partially obscured by the shadow of a concrete pillar, but his build and posture were unmistakably familiar.

Rachel gasped, leaning forward. “That’s... that’s Mr. Henderson! That’s my manager!”

Luca stared at the screen, his face darkening into a mask of pure fury. “Mr. Henderson. The food and beverage director for the Grand Marquette.”

“Yes! He’s the one who scheduled me for the gala tonight!” Rachel’s voice trembled with realization. “He called me twice this morning to make sure I would be on the floor!”

Luca looked back down at Rachel, his expression softening just a fraction—just enough to reveal the dangerous intellect ticking behind his eyes. “He didn't just want you working tonight, Ms. Carter. He wanted you distracted, frantic, and vulnerable. And he needed your son wandering unsupervised in a building controlled by me.”

“Why?” Rachel whispered, the horror finally sinking in. “What does Henderson want with you?”

Before Luca could answer, Marcus’s radio hissed with static.

“Sir! Security Team Four in the basement! We just breached Henderson’s office near the loading docks!” the voice on the radio barked frantically. “He’s not here. But boss... you need to see what he left behind on his desk.”

Luca didn't hesitate. He tossed the tablet onto the settee next to Rachel.

“Stay here,” Luca commanded, his voice leaving no room for argument. He looked down at Noah, who was quietly chewing on another shortbread cookie, completely unfazed by the tension in the room. “My people will bring you warm milk and anything else he wants. You are completely safe in this room, Ms. Carter. No one will ever touch your son while he is under my roof.”

Before Rachel could reply, Luca turned on his heel and strode out of the library, the heavy mahogany doors clicking shut behind him with finality.
