Chapter 4 - The Ledger of Shadows

Down in the subterranean administrative offices of the Grand Marquette, the air smelled of stale coffee, damp concrete, and burnt paper.
Luca strode down the narrow hallway flanked by Marcus and two armed guards. They stopped outside Room B-12—the office of food and beverage director Richard Henderson.
The door was kicked wide open, the lock splintered into jagged splinters of wood.
Inside, filing cabinets had been pried open, papers littered the linoleum floor, and a thin wisp of gray smoke curled up from a metal wastebasket where someone had tried—and failed—to burn a stack of ledger books.
Marcus stepped aside, pointing toward the heavy mahogany desk. “We found this sitting right on top of his computer terminal, boss. It wasn't burned.”
Luca walked over and picked up a heavy, leather-bound accounting ledger. It looked identical to the one recovered from Anthony Russo’s storage unit weeks ago.
He flipped it open.
Page after page of meticulous, handwritten financial entries stared back at him. Millions of dollars moving through offshore shell companies, disguised as luxury hotel renovations, wine imports, and catering contracts.
And right at the bottom of the page, in neat, precise ink, was a signature authorizing the entire operation.
Luca Romano.
Except Luca’s eyes narrowed as he stared at the signature. It was a forgery—an exceptionally good one, executed by someone who had spent years studying the exact slant and pressure of his penmanship.
“It’s a duplicate setup,” Luca said, his voice dangerously low. “Just like the one Daniel Vescari tried to pull across the river.”
“Boss, look at the bank routing numbers on the back page,” Marcus urged, pointing a finger at the bottom margin.
Luca turned the page. The routing numbers didn't lead to a rival mob syndicate or an anonymous offshore tax haven. They led directly to a high-end corporate investment firm located right across Boston Harbor—Vanguard Capital Logistics.
A firm owned and operated by a man named Julian Vance.
Vance was a billionaire real estate developer who had been trying to buy out the Grand Marquette for the past three years to demolish it and build a monolithic glass-and-steel commercial skyscraper. Luca had repeatedly rejected every single multi-million-dollar offer Vance had put on the table.
“Vance,” Luca murmured, the pieces falling into place with terrifying clarity. “He couldn't buy the hotel legally, so he decided to frame me for large-scale financial racketeering, money laundering, and municipal corruption using a shadow ledger.”
“And using Henderson as his inside man,” Marcus added grimly. “Henderson must have planted fake employee tax records and dummy accounts in your name, routing illegal capital through the hotel’s restaurant revenue streams. If federal investigators raided the hotel and found this ledger, along with your forged signature, your entire empire would collapse overnight.”
“And Vance would buy the property for pennies on the dollar at a federal asset auction,” Luca finished, closing the ledger with a heavy thud.
He pulled out his phone, dialing a private, encrypted number. The call connected on the first ring.
“Sofia,” Luca said without preamble. “I need you.”
On the other end of the line, the sharp, brilliant voice of Sofia Calvano came through instantly. “I heard about the lockdown in Boston, Luca. Are you alright?”
“I’m fine. But someone tried to use a four-year-old boy as a pawn in a corporate frame-up. I have the ledger. I have the routing numbers pointing directly to Julian Vance.”

Sofia went silent for a brief second. When she spoke again, her voice was dripping with lethal satisfaction. “Julian Vance has been laundering money through shell companies in New York and Boston for five years. I’ve been sitting on half of his digital footprint, but I couldn't touch him without official municipal backing. Send me those routing numbers right now, Luca. Let’s burn his entire empire to the ground.”
“Do it,” Luca said, hanging up the phone. He turned to Marcus. “Find Richard Henderson. I want him brought to me before he reaches Vance’s office across the harbor. Alive.”
