Chapter 5 - The Sweetest Victory

By sunrise, the mansion was entirely secure.
Federal agents had taken custody of Victor Moretti and the remaining infiltrators, while a forensic cleanup crew quietly restored the grand foyer. The media would report it as a high-end corporate burglary thwarted by private security; the underworld would whisper about it for years as the night the Vale empire proved it was untouchable.
Inside the kitchen, the steel shutters rolled upward, letting in the golden light of dawn.
Sophie sat at the marble island, her hands wrapped around a mug of hot coffee, her heart still hammering against her ribs.
The doors pushed open.
Adrian walked in. His white shirt was stained with dust, a small graze marked his jawline, and his tie was gone, but his eyes were steady and warm as they locked onto hers.
He walked straight over, pulled out the stool next to her, and sat down.
"Are you hurt?" she asked immediately, her hands reaching out on instinct to check his face before she caught herself and pulled back, blushing furiously.
Adrian caught her hand gently, stopping her. He pressed her palm against his cheek.
"I'm fine, Sophie," he said softly. "The house is secure. The threat is gone. And the people who hurt you will never walk free again."
Sophie let out a long, shaky breath, tears of pure relief spilling over her lashes. "I was so scared... not for me, but when I heard the shots..."
"You don't ever have to be scared in this house again," Adrian promised. He reached across the counter and picked up a warm, freshly baked cinnamon roll she had prepared earlier. "Now... are you going to feed me, or do I have to fire the head chef and promote you permanently?"
A genuine, radiant smile broke across Sophie’s face—the first true, unreserved smile she had worn since the day she arrived at the estate.
"I think," Sophie said, her eyes sparkling with quiet confidence, "you can't afford my salary, Mr. Vale."
Adrian laughed—a rich, deep sound that chased away every remaining shadow in the room.

"Try me," he whispered.
In the heart of Chicago’s most feared empire, surrounded by wealth and danger, the plus-size maid who had spent her entire life hiding in the shadows finally stepped into the light—and claimed a kingdom built entirely on devotion.
