Chapter 2 - The Unseen Thread

Evelyn was escorted out of the ballroom in handcuffs by two armed security guards before the footage even finished playing. Her protests and shrieks echoed down the marble corridors until the heavy oak doors finally sealed her out of the estate forever.

When the doors clicked shut, Adrian turned back to the staff.

"You are dismissed," he said coldly. "Except for Mason and the head chef."

Within seconds, the ballroom cleared out, the employees scattering like leaves before a gale. Only Sophie remained standing near the center of the vast room, clutching the edge of her gray uniform jacket, her head bowed.

Adrian walked over to her. The intimidating, feared mafia boss vanished, replaced by a man who looked entirely human, and entirely sickened by what had happened under his roof.

"Sophie," he said softly.

She didn't look up. "You didn't have to do all that, Mr. Vale. I... I can pack my things and go. I’m used to it."

"Look at me."

She hesitated, then slowly raised her gaze. Her eyes were red-rimmed, swimming with unshed tears and a lifetime of conditioned self-doubt.

"What did you mean when you said you're used to it?" Adrian asked.

Sophie swallowed hard, looking down at the polished floorboards. "People like me... we learn early on that when someone with power points a finger at you, you don't fight back. You take the blame. You apologize. Because if you defend yourself, you just make them angry, and anger makes life harder. I thought... I thought if I just kept my head down, did my work, and didn't bother anyone, I’d be safe."

Adrian felt a muscle tick in his jaw. The realization of how much invisible cruelty Sophie had endured in his home—a home he claimed to control completely—hit him like a physical blow.

"You were safe because you were invisible," Adrian said quietly. "That ends today. Mason, bring up the rest of the file."

Mason stepped forward, holding out a printed dossier alongside the tablet. "Boss, we decrypted the rest of that message string from Evelyn’s phone. It wasn't just about the bracelet."

Adrian took the papers, scanning the printed text. His eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.

"Explain," Adrian ordered.

"Evelyn wasn't acting alone," Mason explained, his voice grim. "For the past six months, someone has been systematically leaking architectural blueprints, security patrol schedules, and financial audit logs of Vale International’s downtown hotel acquisitions to a rival syndicate—the Moretti family."

Sophie gasped, stepping back. "The Morettis?"

"Yes," Mason nodded. "When Evelyn wanted to sabotage someone or cover her tracks, she needed a scapegoat. She chose Sophie because she knew Sophie kept to herself, had no family in the city to ask questions, and wouldn't be believed if she reported the setup. But more than that... the Morettis were planning a targeted infiltration of this estate. They needed an insider to plant listening devices. Evelyn agreed to help them in exchange for a payoff."

Adrian looked at Sophie, his expression softening as he realized the true magnitude of the danger she had accidentally disrupted.

"They targeted you not just because you were an easy victim," Adrian murmured, "but because they needed someone whose absence wouldn't be questioned if they framed her for corporate espionage and had her locked away."

Sophie’s hands trembled. "I... I just wanted a quiet job. I just wanted to bake and clean and pay my rent."

"You did your job," Adrian said firmly, stepping closer to her. "And because of your resilience, you uncovered a security breach that could have cost me everything. You didn't just survive today, Sophie. You saved this house."
