Chapter 4 - The Siege of Lake Forest

Adrian released her chin instantly. The gentle baker vanished, replaced in a fraction of a second by the ruthless syndicate leader the underworld feared.
He pulled a sleek, heavy-duty encrypted satellite phone from his inner pocket, tapping three commands before sliding it back.
"Stay in this kitchen, Sophie," Adrian commanded, his voice absolute. "Lock the reinforced steel shutters. Do not open them for anyone—not even if you hear my voice—unless I give you the specific code word: Claire."
"Adrian—" she gasped, panic gripping her chest.
"Trust me," he said, pressing a quick kiss to her knuckles before turning on his heel and striding out of the kitchen.
The heavy steel security shutters rolled down automatically with a mechanical hum, sealing the kitchen off from the rest of the mansion like a bank vault. Sophie stood alone in the bright room, the hum of the refrigerator the only sound breaking the terrifying silence.
Outside, chaos erupted.
The sound of shattering glass, echoing gunshots, and shouting security officers reverberated through the thick walls. The Moretti family had decided to strike directly, bypassing subtlety in a desperate bid to retrieve the compromised data files before federal authorities seized them.
Inside the mansion's main foyer, Mason Reed and six armed guards held the primary staircase, returning disciplined fire against a dozen masked intruders who had breached the front doors.
Adrian walked down the grand staircase alone, his suit jacket removed, his sleeves rolled up to reveal the powerful forearms and scars of a man who had fought his way to the top of Chicago’s underworld.
"Boss!" Mason yelled over the deafening crack of gunfire. "They're pushing through the west wing! There's too many of them!"
"Let them come," Adrian said coldly.
He drew a sleek, suppressed pistol from his holster, checking the chamber with clinical precision.
From the shadows of the hallway stepped Victor Moretti—son of the rival crime lord, wearing a smug grin despite the flashing emergency lights.
"Well, well, well," Victor sneered, keeping his gun raised toward Adrian. "The great Adrian Vale, brought down by a bunch of grease-monkey mercenaries. Where's your precious little staff now, Adrian? Did you hide them in the basement?"
Adrian didn't raise his voice. He didn't blink.
"You stepped foot on my property," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You threatened my home. And you frightened someone under my protection."
"Oh, spare me the hero routine," Victor laughed. "You're outnumbered—"
He never finished the sentence.
From the upper gallery, three of Adrian’s elite sniper-trained guards dropped down behind the intruders, disarming them in a synchronized, brutal display of close-quarters combat. Before Victor could react, Adrian closed the distance between them with terrifying speed, striking the gun from Victor’s hand and slamming him against the mahogany wall with enough force to crack the plaster.
"Tell your father," Adrian whispered into Victor’s ear, pressing the cold barrel of his pistol directly beneath the man's chin, "that if any of his men ever look in the direction of my estate again, I won't just dismantle his operations. I will wipe his name from this city completely."

Victor choked out a breathless, terrified affirmation.
Adrian shoved him hard to the floor, motioning to Mason. "Tie him up. Hand him over to the federal task force. And clear the rest of the grounds."
