Chapter 8 - Claimed by the Lion

The storm outside had begun to clear by midnight, leaving the sprawling marble estate washed in silver moonlight.

In the private medical suite upstairs, Isabella was fast asleep in her bed, her breathing deep and even, guarded by two loyal sentries stationed outside her door.

In the primary study, Naomi sat in a velvet armchair near the fireplace, an ice pack pressed gently against her bruised cheekbone.

The door opened softly, and Luca walked in. He had washed his hands and changed into a clean black shirt, though the tension still corded heavily in the muscles of his neck. He walked over holding a small jar of medicinal ointment and knelt down on one knee directly in front of Naomi’s chair.

“Let me see,” Luca said quietly, his voice devoid of its usual iron authority, replaced by a raw, profound gentleness.

Naomi hesitated, then lowered her hand.

Luca gently uncapped the jar, dipped his thumb into the cool ointment, and smoothed it with infinite care across the purpling bruise on her cheekbone. His touch was surprisingly tender for a man whose hands had ended wars.

“You didn't have to hit him with a lamp,” Luca murmured, a faint, ghost of a smile touching his lips. “You could have stayed back.”

“Somebody had to stop him from shooting you or your mother,” Naomi replied softly, her dark eyes locking onto his. “I’m a nurse, Mr. Moretti. Saving lives is kind of in the job description.”

Luca lowered his hand, though he didn't move away. He remained kneeling before her, his gaze intense, unwavering, and utterly consuming.

“You’ve saved my mother twice,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant rumble. “And tonight, you saved my house from total destruction. In our world, when someone saves the life of the head family, they aren't just an employee anymore.”

Naomi’s breath hitched. “What am I, Luca?”

Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy, platinum signet ring engraved with the Moretti crest—a coiled silver serpent framing a blooming white rose. He took her hand and slid the ring slowly onto her right ring finger. It fit with absolute, terrifying perfection.

“You are claimed,” Luca whispered, pressing his lips gently against the back of her hand. “By my mother, by this house, and by me. If you’ll have me.”

Naomi looked down at the platinum ring gleaming in the firelight, then up into the dark, fierce eyes of the man who ruled the city. She realized then that she was no longer just the nurse from the slums. She was the heart of the Moretti dynasty.

She offered a soft, radiant smile, sliding her fingers securely into his.

“I suppose,” Naomi whispered, “someone has to keep you out of trouble.”

And in the quiet, storm-washed silence of the estate, the lion had finally found his queen.
