Chapter 4 - The Confession in the Study

Twenty minutes later, the music room was empty save for Isabella, Naomi, and Luca.
Isabella sat comfortably in her velvet armchair near the fireplace, sipping a cup of chamomile tea that Naomi had carefully prepared. Her cheek was still faintly pink from Vivian’s slap, but her eyes shone with a fierce, triumphant light.
Luca stood by the marble fireplace, staring down into the glowing embers. He held the forged legal document in his hand, his thumb tracing the edges of the fraudulent signature line.
Finally, he turned his gaze toward Naomi, who was quietly packing her medical bag near the piano, preparing to take her leave.
“You’re leaving?” Luca asked, his voice cutting through the quiet room.
Naomi paused, looking up at him with guarded caution. She had spent the last five months avoiding the syndicate boss as much as humanly possible, fully aware of the violent world he inhabited.
“Mr. Moretti,” Naomi said carefully, keeping her voice steady. “After what happened today... clearly, the dynamic in this house has changed. It’s safer for me to resign. I can recommend another qualified nurse to take over Isabella’s daily care.”
Before Luca could answer, Isabella let out a sharp, angry two-note chord on the piano nearby.
No.
Isabella pointed her finger firmly at Naomi, then struck a low G-note twice.
Yes. Stay.
Luca offered a faint, humorless smile—the first time Naomi had ever seen him look genuinely amused. “My mother has spoken, Nurse Carter. And in this house, defying her is roughly as healthy as jumping into a den of wolves.”
“Mr. Moretti, I’m serious,” Naomi insisted, crossing her arms defensively. “I’m a nurse, not a bodyguard or a pawn in a family mafia war. Today I nearly got framed for forgery, and last month one of your associates was shot three blocks away from here. I have a life. I have student loans, yes, but I also have survival instincts.”
Luca walked slowly toward her, stopping just a few feet away. Up close, his presence was overwhelming—radiating a raw, intimidating magnetism that made Naomi’s breath catch in her throat.
“You saved my mother’s life today,” Luca said quietly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with intense, unyielding sincerity. “Not just from Vivian’s physical assault, but from a hostile takeover that would have destroyed everything my family built over three generations. In our world, loyalty of that magnitude is never dismissed with a handshake and a severance check.”
He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a sleek, heavy titanium keycard, placing it gently onto the wooden piano keys beside Naomi.
“What is this?” Naomi asked, staring at the card.
“That is the master override key to the primary residential wing, the private elevator, and the armored perimeter gates,” Luca said. “Effective immediately, your salary is tripled, your student loans are being paid off in full by the end of business today, and you have my personal, unbreakable guarantee that no one inside or outside these walls will ever touch a hair on your head again.”

Naomi stared at the titanium keycard, then looked over at Isabella, who was nodding encouragingly with a warm, grandmotherly smile.
She realized then that there was no escaping the orbit of the Moretti family—not because she was trapped by force, but because she had just been claimed by them.
