Chapter 5 - The Unseen Enemy

The weeks that followed the expulsion of Vivian Vance brought a strange, fragile peace to the Moretti estate.

True to his word, Luca had wiped out Vivian’s family corporate holdings within forty-eight hours, reducing the arrogant socialite’s dynasty to financial ruin and forcing her into silent exile overseas. The staff treated Naomi with a new level of profound respect, whispering among themselves about the day the quiet nurse had stared down the syndicate boss and won.

Yet, beneath the surface luxury of the mansion, a darker storm was brewing.

Luca was rarely home. He left the estate before dawn and returned long after midnight, locked in a brutal territorial war with the rival Romano syndicate, who were aggressively attempting to seize control of the southern shipping docks while the Moretti family was perceived as vulnerable following the internal betrayal.

Naomi spent her days managing Isabella’s physical therapy, playing chess in the courtyard, and practicing piano duets on the Steinway. But she noticed a subtle change in the older woman. Isabella was restless. She frequently stared out the high parlor windows toward the gated entry, her hands tapping out nervous rhythms on her knee.

One evening, as a heavy autumn storm battered the glass panes of the study, Naomi was organizing Isabella’s medical chart on the mahogany desk when a sharp flash of lightning illuminated the courtyard below.

Through the rain-streaked window, Naomi saw something that made her blood run cold.

A sleek, unmarked black sedan had pulled up just outside the outer security checkpoint. The headlights were off. A man stepped out from the passenger side, wearing a dark raincoat, holding a heavy metal briefcase. He didn't approach the front doors; instead, he slipped stealthily through the side service gate—a gate that required a high-level titanium keycard to open.

The service gate? Naomi thought. Only Luca, Viktor, and...

A terrifying realization slammed into her mind.

The service gate keycard wasn't just held by trusted guards. The traitor wasn't gone. Vivian had been a pawn, but the mastermind inside the Moretti inner circle was still operating in the shadows.

Before Naomi could process the thought, the study door creaked open.
