Chapter 10 - The Final Chapter – Where the Heart Belongs

The sun was setting over the rolling hills of Martha’s Vineyard, casting a brilliant orange and purple glow across the private stretch of coastline we had escaped to for the weekend.

It was a far cry from the cold, stone-walled isolation of the Pascale estate in Boston.

We had spent the last year completely dismantling the remnants of the syndicate’s illegal operations, turning the family’s vast financial assets into legitimate, philanthropic medical foundations funded by the Pascale name. Massimo had officially stepped down as head of the family, handing the reins over to a council of trusted advisors while he focused entirely on his health, his rehabilitation, and—most importantly—us.

I sat on the wooden deck of the seaside cottage, watching the waves crash against the shore, a thick medical journal resting unopened in my lap.

Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path behind me.

A moment later, two strong, warm arms wrapped around my shoulders, and a familiar, comforting scent of cedar and sea salt enveloped me.

“You’re quiet today,” Massimo’s deep voice murmured, his lips brushing against the crown of my head.

I leaned back against his chest, closing my eyes and breathing him in. “Just thinking about how crazy our lives have been. If someone had told me two years ago that I’d fall in love with a mafia boss while trying to teach him how to walk again, I would have told them they needed psychiatric help.”

Massimo chuckled, a rich, resonant sound that vibrated through my entire body. He stepped around the wooden chair and dropped gracefully to one knee right in front of me on the deck.

My breath hitched in my throat.

“Massimo... what are you doing?” I whispered, my heart suddenly racing like it had the very first day we met in the glass conservatory.

He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he reached into the pocket of his linen shirt and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.

My hands flew to my mouth, tears instantly blurring my vision.

“When you walked into my mansion, Tessa, I was a dead man walking,” Massimo began, his voice thick with emotion, his dark eyes shining with an absolute, unwavering devotion. “I thought my life was defined by the enemies I made, the blood on my hands, and the wheelchair that trapped me. I thought love was a weakness. I thought vulnerability was a death sentence.”

He popped open the velvet box, revealing a breathtaking diamond ring that caught the dying rays of the sunset, sparkling like a star against the dark velvet.

“You didn't just fix my spine,” he continued, his voice trembling slightly with raw honesty. “You dragged me out of the dark, pulled the armor off my chest, and forced me to feel everything I had spent a lifetime running from. You saved my life, Tessa. And I refuse to spend another second of it without you.”

He looked up at me, his gaze entirely stripped of all the dangerous walls he had built around his soul.

“Will you marry me? Will you stay by my side, and let me spend the rest of my days proving that the devil of Boston found his salvation in your arms?”

Tears spilled over my eyelashes, cutting warm tracks down my cheeks, but I was smiling so wide my face hurt.

“Yes,” I sobbed softly, holding out my hand. “Yes, a million times yes, Massimo.”

He slid the diamond ring onto my finger, stood up, and pulled me into his arms, lifting me off my feet as he kissed me with a fierce, eternal passion that tasted like victory, homecoming, and endless love.

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of twilight, but as Massimo held me tightly against his beating heart, I knew one thing with absolute certainty:

Sometimes desperation breaks your door down. Sometimes it forces you to face your deepest fears. And sometimes, if you’re brave enough to answer, it leads you exactly where you were always meant to belong.
