Chapter 9 - Epilogue – The New Empire

Six months later.

The rain was falling softly outside my apartment window in Boston, tapping against the glass in a gentle, rhythmic lullaby.

But I wasn't sitting at my tiny kitchen table anymore.

I stood on the wraparound balcony of a sprawling, sunlit penthouse overlooking the Boston harbor, wrapped in a plush cashmere robe, sipping hot coffee. Behind me, warm arms slid around my waist, and a familiar chin rested gently on my shoulder.

“You’re standing out here in the cold without a jacket again,” Massimo murmured into my neck, pressing a soft kiss against my skin.

“I like the morning air,” I smiled, leaning back against his solid, powerful chest. His recovery had been nothing short of miraculous; today, he walked without a single trace of a limp, stronger and more commanding than ever.

“The dean of the medical faculty called my office this morning,” Massimo noted smoothly, resting his hands over my flat stomach. “He wanted to confirm if the anonymous fifty-thousand-dollar endowment for the neurological physical therapy research lab was officially cleared.”

I turned around in his embrace, raising an eyebrow. “An anonymous endowment? Really, Massimo? You couldn't just pay my tuition like a normal person?”

“I am not a normal person, Dr. Fitzgerald,” he smirked, his dark eyes sparkling with playful arrogance. “I’m a reformed mafia boss who likes to make sure his favorite physical therapist never has to stress over student loans again.”

I laughed, wrapping my arms around his neck. “Well, your favorite physical therapist just successfully defended her doctoral dissertation yesterday. So technically, I’m Dr. Fitzgerald now.”

Massimo’s expression softened, a deep, overwhelming pride shining in his eyes. He pulled me flush against him, his lips hovering inches from mine.

“My brilliant, stubborn, fearless doctor,” he whispered against my mouth. “What do we conquer next?”

“No more crime syndicates, no more hit squads,” I smiled, resting my forehead against his. “Just you, me, and a very long vacation.”

“Consider it done,” Massimo murmured, and kissed me with a depth of love that promised forever.

The mafia boss had lost his underworld power, but in doing something far more miraculous, he had found his heart. And as we stood together watching the Boston sunrise paint the harbor in gold, I knew that our story was only just beginning.
