Chapter 5 - Blood on the Marble

The spell shattered instantly.
Massimo pulled back, his face hardening back into the mask of a ruthless syndicate boss, though his chest was still heaving from the physical exertion of standing. Without a second of hesitation, his hands dropped from the parallel bars, and he sank back down into his wheelchair with a controlled, fluid motion that masked the searing pain in his spine.
“How many?” Massimo’s voice dropped into a lethal, icy calm that was far more terrifying than his anger.
“Four men, armed and moving through the gardens,” Marco reported, keeping his eyes respectfully lowered, though he shot a brief, suspicious glance in my direction. “They bypassed the motion sensors using a frequency jammer. They’re heading straight for the east wing.”
Massimo spun his chair around, his hand sliding under the leather armrest where a heavy, matte-black firearm was neatly concealed in a magnetic holster. “Secure the perimeter. Do not let them reach the main foyer. And get Dr. Fitzgerald into the panic room downstairs.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” I interrupted, stepping forward, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
Massimo snapped his head up, his dark eyes flashing with sudden fury. “Tessa, listen to me right now. This isn't a hospital ward. This is a war zone. Get into the basement bunker immediately.”
“I am your physical therapist, not a piece of luggage you can stash in a closet when things get messy!” I argued, refusing to back down. “If a firefight breaks out, you can't walk, Massimo! You need someone who knows your medical status, someone who can patch you up if—when things go sideways!”
“If I die tonight, your tuition doesn't mean a damn thing!” he roared, his voice echoing off the tile walls.
“I don't care about the tuition anymore!” I yelled back, the truth slipping out before I could stop it. “I care about you!”
The words hung in the air, absolute and undeniable.
Massimo froze. The harsh lines of his face softened for a fraction of a second, a profound shock rippling through his dark eyes. Before he could respond, the distant, muffled pop-pop-pop of silenced gunfire echoed through the cavernous corridors of the mansion.
Glass shattered somewhere down the hall. Shouting voices bounced off the stone walls.
Marco stepped forward, drawing his weapon. “Boss, they’re in the house. We have to move now.”
Massimo looked at me, a silent war waging behind his eyes. He didn't argue anymore. He reached out, grabbing my wrist with a firm, unbreakable grip, pulling me down beside his wheelchair as Marco pushed open a hidden panel behind the mirrored wall of the rehabilitation room.
“Stay behind me,” Massimo ordered, his voice laced with deadly resolve as he racked the slide of his firearm. “If anyone comes through that door, you run. Do you understand?”
“Not a chance,” I whispered, pulling a heavy metal surgical scissors from my medical bag and holding it tightly in my hand. “I’m staying right here.”
We descended into the darkened sub-level corridor beneath the mansion, the air smelling of damp earth and old concrete. The panic room was a reinforced steel vault hidden behind a brick facade, equipped with monitors displaying live security feeds from every corner of the estate.
Massimo wheeled himself inside the threshold, positioning his chair so he had a clear line of sight to the hydraulic door while keeping me safely shielded behind his broad shoulders.
On the central monitor, we watched the carnage unfold in real-time.
Three masked intruders in tactical gear breached the glass conservatory—the very room where we had argued just days ago. Marco and two of his guards engaged them in a brutal, silent firefight among the shattered flower pots and ruined marble tables. Gunpowder smoke billowed against the glass dome.
One intruder went down, clutching his shoulder. Another spun around, firing blindly into the hallway.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the upper landing outside our hidden corridor. Heavy boots thudded against the oak stairs. Someone was looking for the sub-level entrance.
Massimo raised his gun, his breathing slowing down to the rhythmic, calculated cadence of a sniper waiting for a target. His face was a mask of cold, unyielding marble. The mafia boss had returned; the broken, vulnerable patient was gone.

The doorknob of the hidden wall panel began to rattle.
Slowly, deliberately, the latch turned.
