Chapter 6 - The Cornered Maid

"You're a very clever girl, Cameron," Mrs. Gable said, stepping into the room and closing the door behind her. "But clever girls from Queens don't survive in Tribeca when they stick their noses into family business."

"You've been poisoning him," Cameron said, her voice steady despite the hammer of her heart against her ribs. "Every day. In his tea, in his soup. You made him look like a monster so his father would lose his mind trying to fix him."

"Julian pays very well," Mrs. Gable said, raising the candlestick. "And fourteen nannies were smart enough to run away when the boy became too much to handle. You should have taken the hint, Cameron. Now, you're just another tragic accident in a dangerous house."

Before the older woman could strike, the heavy wooden door to the room was kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash.

Marco, the security chief, stormed into the room, his weapon drawn and leveled directly at Mrs. Gable’s chest. Behind him stood Matteo Duca, his face a mask of such terrifying, demonic rage that Mrs. Gable instantly dropped the candlestick, her knees buckling as she hit the floor.

Matteo didn't look at the housekeeper. He walked right past her, his eyes fixed on Cameron. He saw the ledger in her hand, the plastic bag of evidence she had gathered, and the sheer bravery in her eyes.

"Take her to the basement at the docks, Marco," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a register that sounded like a death knell. "And call my brother. Tell him we have an emergency family meeting."
