Chapter 4 - The Analysis

That night, Cameron slipped out of the penthouse while Leo was sleeping under the watchful eye of Marco, Matteo’s most trusted security chief. She drove her old SUV down to the pharmacy lab in Queens where her cousin, Elena, worked as a toxicologist.

"Can you run a quick screening on this?" Cameron asked, tossing the plastic bag onto the lab counter.

Elena looked at the cloth, then at Cameron’s exhausted face. "What is this, Cam? You look like you're involved in something dangerous."

"Just a standard household issue," Cameron lied. "Just check it for me. Please."

An hour later, Elena walked back out of the clean room, her expression grim. "Cam, whatever was in this liquid isn't a cleaning chemical. It’s a concentrated solution of digitalis extract—foxglove. In a grown adult, it would cause severe nausea, dizziness, and a racing heart. In a three-year-old child... it would look like a sudden, unexplainable panic attack. Consistent exposure would lead to extreme behavioral aggression, hallucinations, and eventually, cardiac failure."

Cameron felt the room spin. The fourteen nannies hadn't failed because they were incompetent. Leo hadn't been throwing tantrums because he was a monster.

He was being systematically poisoned from inside his own home.
