Chapter 6 - The Matriarch’s Blessing

Slowly, Luca turned his head away from the service stairs and looked across the foyer toward Nora.
Nora stood frozen by the pillar, still clutching her canvas duffel bag, her heart pounding against her ribs. She was standing in the presence of the most feared underworld boss in New York, a man who had just dismantled an entire family dynasty with a single phone call.
Luca walked toward her. His strides were slow, measured, and deliberate.
When he stopped three feet away from her, he looked her up and down—not with arrogance or condescension, but with a deep, piercing intensity that seemed to read every thought in her mind.
“You sent the message,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a softer, more conversational register.
“I did,” Nora replied, keeping her voice steady despite her trembling knees. “Your mother didn't deserve that. And your signature was being forged on documents that could have destroyed your holdings.”
Luca stared at her for a long, silent moment. Then, to Nora’s complete astonishment, a faint, genuine ghost of a smile touched the corner of his hard lips.
“You risked your life, your job, and your safety to protect a woman you barely knew, against a woman who held absolute power in this house,” Luca noted, his dark eyes softening slightly. “Most people in your position would have kept their heads down and walked away.”
“I’m not most people,” Nora answered simply. “And cruelty is cruelty, no matter who signs the paycheck.”
Before Luca could respond, the sound of motorized wheels echoed softly from the hallway behind them.
Nora and Luca both turned.
Elena Ventresca was rolling herself out of the private family wing, pushed gently by a senior nurse. The red mark on her cheek was still faintly visible, but her posture was upright, and her dark, sharp eyes—the exact same eyes as her son’s—sparked with fierce, indomitable life.
“Bring her here, Luca,” the old matriarch commanded, her voice raspy but commanding.
Luca nodded, stepping aside to let his mother approach.
Elena stopped her wheelchair right in front of Nora. She reached out with a trembling, frail hand and grabbed Nora’s fingers, squeezing them tightly.
“My son is a fool for trusting that snake of a woman,” Elena said bluntly, casting a scathing glance toward the service stairs. “But he has enough sense to recognize true loyalty when it stands right in front of him.”
“Mrs. Ventresca,” Nora began respectfully. “I’m just glad I could help—”
“Nonsense,” Elena interrupted, waving a hand dismissively. “You saved my life, and you saved my son from a catastrophic legal trap. In this house, a debt like that is never ignored.”
Elena looked up at Luca, raising an eyebrow. “Well? Are you going to stand there like a statue, or are you going to offer our savior a real position worthy of her character?”
Luca looked down at Nora, his expression turning thoughtful, serious, and deeply intense.
“The position of housekeeper is officially vacant,” Luca said smoothly, his eyes locking onto hers. “In fact, the position of Chief of Operations for my private family estate is vacant as well. It comes with a penthouse suite on the upper tier, an unlimited expense account, and full executive security clearance.”
Nora stared at him, stunned. “Mr. Ventresca... I’m an analyst, not an executive—”

“You proved today that you possess the one thing money cannot buy in my world,” Luca interrupted quietly, taking a half-step closer. “Absolute, unshakeable integrity.”
Elena smiled warmly, patting Nora’s hand. “Accept it, child. You’re family now.”
