Chapter 2 - The Housekeeper’s Secret

Nora didn't flinch. She kept her eyes fixed on Celeste’s cold, glittering diamonds.

“You forged her signature,” Nora said quietly, the words hanging heavily in the opulent room. “If Luca finds out that you tried to sign away the family holdings while he was out of the country... there won't be a wedding. There won't even be a safe place for you in this city.”

Celeste let out a sharp, humorless laugh, stepping closer until she was standing right in Nora’s personal space, smelling of expensive French perfume and pure venom.

“Luca is in Zurich,” Celeste mocked softly. “By the time he flies back, we’ll be husband and wife, and this estate will be legally under my control. Do you really think a billionaire cartel boss is going to believe a low-level cleaning girl over his elegant, charitable, adoring fiancée? Who do you think he’ll trust, Nora? The woman sharing his bed, or the help?”

Elena let out a distressed whimpering sound from her wheelchair, her hand reaching out weakly toward Nora.

Nora’s mind raced. Celeste was right about one thing: in the brutal underworld of the Ventresca empire, word of a servant meant nothing against the word of a high-society bride. Direct confrontation was suicide.

So Nora lowered her gaze, adopting a mask of sudden, trembling submission.

“I... I understand, Miss Beaumont,” Nora murmured, pitching her voice to sound small and defeated. “I won't say anything. I’ll clean up the glass and leave quietly.”

Celeste smiled, clearly satisfied that she had broken another peasant.

“Good girl,” Celeste sneered, turning her back to check her reflection in the gilded wall mirror. “Leave the pill case on the desk. And pack your bags before my security detail comes up to check the floor.”

Nora knelt down on the Persian rug. With deliberate care, she swept the shattered crystal shards into her dustpan. But as she moved, her fingers brushed against something else hidden beneath the edge of the heavy velvet drapery—a small, black micro-SD card that had fallen from the desk during the struggle.

Without hesitation, Nora slipped the tiny chip into the pocket of her uniform apron.

She stood up, grabbed her tray, and backed out of the sitting room, keeping her head bowed until the heavy door clicked shut behind her.

Once she was out of sight down the private service corridor, Nora didn't go to her quarters to pack. She ducked into the high-security utility room where the penthouse’s master surveillance hub was housed.

Every inch of the Ventresca estate was wired with state-of-the-art security cameras—a paranoid necessity for a man like Luca Ventresca. Usually, only Luca and his head of security had administrative access to the live feeds and cloud archives.

But Nora had spent three years working as an IT systems analyst before a family tragedy forced her into domestic labor to pay off her brother’s medical debts.

She plugged the micro-SD card into the main terminal, bypassed the local firewall with a few rapid keystrokes, and pulled up the real-time encrypted data logs of the private sitting room.

What she saw on the high-definition monitor made her blood run cold.

The camera angle from the bookshelf captured everything: Celeste towering over the wheelchair, striking the elderly woman across the face, withholding her life-saving medication, and forcing her hand onto the forged document.

Nora’s fingers hovered over the keyboard. She copied the high-resolution footage onto an encrypted cloud server, backing it up to three separate external locations.

Then she opened her encrypted messaging app and pulled up a contact name she had memorized from the secure corporate roster—a direct, encrypted line marked simply: L.V. — Urgent Only.

She typed a single message:

Your mother is in danger. The wedding is a trap. Check your private penthouse server immediately.

She hit send.

Just as the transmission confirmed delivery, heavy footsteps echoed down the service hallway, followed by a loud, authoritative knock on the utility room door.

“Nora! Open up! Miss Beaumont wants you out of the building right now!” shouted one of the estate guards.

Nora pocketed her phone, took a deep breath, and opened the door.
