Chapter 3 - The Ghost in Zurich

Six thousand miles away, in a sleek, soundproofed penthouse suite overlooking the glittering, snow-dusted skyline of Zurich, Luca Ventresca sat in total darkness.
The room smelled of espresso and cold mountain air. On the massive mahogany desk before him, three encrypted laptops glowed with live feeds, financial ledgers, and intelligence reports from New York.
Luca was a man carved out of obsidian and winter ice. At thirty-two, he controlled the largest shipping and logistics syndicate on the East Coast—a legitimate global empire built on top of a terrifyingly ruthless criminal foundation. He wore bespoke Italian suits that cost more than a luxury sedan, and his dark, piercing eyes missed nothing.
For months, his inner circle had pushed him toward marriage with Celeste Beaumont. They said a rising syndicate boss needed a respectable, pedigree bride to cement his transition into legitimate high society.
Luca had agreed out of cold, tactical necessity. Marriage was a contract, an alliance of assets. He didn't love Celeste, and he didn't expect to.
He expected her to look good on his arm, smile for the cameras, and leave him alone to run his empire.
Then his encrypted phone vibrated softly on the desk.
Luca glanced down. The screen lit up with a priority notification from his private New York residence network—a channel that only triggered when an internal security protocol was breached or a direct message was routed through the high-security admin port.
He picked up the phone and read the text:
Your mother is in danger. The wedding is a trap. Check your private penthouse server immediately.
Luca’s brow furrowed. The penthouse security system was air-gapped from the public internet. Only three people had administrative clearance: himself, his head of security, and... nobody else. No maid or butler had access to the master feed routing.
With two precise taps of his finger, Luca bypassed the regional firewall and logged directly into the live security archives of the Manhattan penthouse, specifically targeting the camera mounted in the private family sitting room.
The timestamp on the file read 11:42 AM—Today.
Luca clicked play.
In the absolute silence of the Zurich suite, the high-definition video began to roll.
He watched as Celeste Beaumont—the refined, charitable, gentle woman he had chosen as his bride—strode across the Persian rug, leaned over his frail, elderly mother, and slapped her across the face with terrifying casualness.
He watched as Celeste shattered a crystal glass, kicked the shards aside, and held back his mother’s vital cardiac medication, using blackmail to force her signature onto a legal document.
He watched the forged continuity amendment pass before his eyes.
And then he watched a quiet, composed housekeeper named Nora step into the frame, risking her life and livelihood to protect an old woman while Celeste screamed threats and shoved her against a desk.
The temperature in the Zurich suite seemed to drop twenty degrees.
Luca’s face didn't twist into rage. His jaw simply locked into a hard, unyielding line of pure, lethal granite. His dark eyes turned dead and black, like the abyss of the ocean.
He picked up a secure satellite phone and dialed a direct, scrambled extension.
“Boss?” answered a gruff voice on the other end after half a ring.
“Vance,” Luca said, his voice a low, terrifying whisper that made the seasoned hitman and head of security swallow hard across the Atlantic. “Where are you?”
“Outside the Manhattan estate, sir. Just got word from the detail that Miss Beaumont ordered a housekeeper fired for dropping a glass. Everything’s quiet.”
“Everything is not quiet,” Luca cut him off, his voice flat, controlled, and absolute. “Listen to me very carefully, Vance. I am not in Zurich. I never left New York.”
Vance paused, confusion rippling through his tone. “Boss? Private flight records showed your jet landing in Switzerland this morning—”
“A decoy flight,” Luca snapped coldly. “I’ve been staying at our safehouse in Brooklyn all week, testing the loyalty of everyone in that penthouse. And tonight, I got my answer.”
Luca stood up from the desk, buttoning his charcoal suit jacket as he stared out at the Swiss lights that were now just a reflection in his screen.
“Lock down the estate perimeter,” Luca commanded, his voice carrying the weight of an executioner. “Do not let a single person in or out. And Vance?”
“Yes, boss?”

“Find Nora, the housekeeper. Treat her like royalty. If a hair on her head is harmed, I’ll hold every man in the security detail personally responsible.”
“Understood, Mr. Ventresca. We’re moving in now.”
