Chapter 9 - The New Normal
Life became a series of small, beautiful moments.
Breakfast on the patio. Walks in the park. The mundane, wonderful act of existing without the constant shadow of the threat.
Ruby finished her degree, she started a foundation for children in Pilsen, and she helped Vincent transition his business into something legitimate, something that didn't depend on the pain of others.
They weren't perfect. They were two people who had been broken, coming together to build something whole.
One afternoon, sitting in the garden, Leo running through the sprinklers, Vincent looked at Ruby.
“I still don't understand it,” he said. “Why you?”

“Because,” Ruby said, smiling, “I knew what it felt like to be ignored. I knew what it felt like to be judged. And I knew that everyone, no matter how much they think they don't want it, is looking for a light.”
Vincent took her hand, his fingers intertwining with hers. “You were right.”
